  • Forexpro: @lauralynnee $SWI Hi, Lauralynnee, StockCharts.com finally managed to do the arithmetic on $SWI ... Hope you're doing well; all the best!
  • lauralynnee: Has anyone else come across this weird chart issue before? I've been following what happened to $SWI, bought for for $17.10, stopped out on 7/15 at $16.66, it took a nose dive after that down to $10 today. Anyhow, I wanted to do a post-mortem on it and was surprised that the historical chart is way off. I've checked multiple sites and it's showing the same on all sites... From what I can tell via news, there was a "spin-off" that was completed today but I'm not sure how that would affect the historic chart. Anyhow, trippin' a bit here, any insights on how that all works?
  • Forexpro: @lauralynnee $SWI

    Hi Lauralynnee,

Yeah, the people managing the databases don't always handle this type of corporate action well. I've attached StockCharts.com's attempt, which has obviously not been adjusted. Here's the summary of the action as p ...
  • Henry: @lauralynnee $SWI TC2000 shows the same as TOS. As Forexpro says, they got it wrong. TOS shows the spinoff N-able as $NABL
  • lauralynnee: @Forexpro @Henry $SWI Thanks for the input, super interesting! Also, glad to know I'm not going crazy, I checked and rechecked like 10 times trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Ha!
  • lauralynnee: $SWI Ok... so looking for some pointers here. Here's what I'm seeing as I'm working on my chart reading. Anything I'm missing? Have wrong? BB narrowing and travelling, 20d is crossing above 50d, still well below 200 but that was mostly due to the hacking stuff back in Jan. Good prospect? Thinking I'll set alert at $17.50ish which is on the upper BB.
  • cgendro1: @lauralynnee $SWI depending on your timeframe you could take a small starter position. I would prefer it take out the high of 17.53 on 6/14 or take out the downtrend line that started on that date. It tried today but pulled back. So another view is to take out today's high and start a sm position. Also 50dma is trending down though I do see a BB width of just over 4. Not my trade but I don't know your style. Just my 2 cents :)
  • Forexpro: @lauralynnee $SWI

    Hi, Lauraynnee,

Dunno about "pointers", really, but I did look at the chart. The Bollinger Bands are pretty tight, and the stochastics aren't overbought. Those are secondary, though. I would describe the price action as ...
  • issues: @cgendro1 $SWI We prefer and hold positions in $GLBE and $ASAN
  • lauralynnee: @cgendro1 @forexpro @issues $SWI Appreciate the input and perspectives here all. Based on the input I think I'm going to buy a small position on it once it hits closer to the $17.50, setting stop below the 16.70 mark because I've got some time on this one and do think it seems worth the small risk. Again, thanks for the time!

  • wijimmy: $SWI ... No floor for $SWI .. Cyberattacks are bad { OK } and now I just read this from this morning.. MarketWatch also claimed that the company's two biggest investors had sold "more than $280 million in stock to a Canadian public pension fund" on Dec.7. The report added that the two investors, private equity firms, had also said in a joint statement that they "were not aware of this potential cyberattack" at the time they sold the stock... • DAN: $SWI -- Any aggressive traders might want to consider a snapback on $SWI after the big selloff that was triggered because of a big hack that essentially made their software a cyber joke. I wonder if their head of security came from Equifax ($EFX), the company headed by Richard Smith that allowed your data to be seen by anyone. If I recall correctly, the expert in charge of their security had a degree in music...maybe even music composition...which is a lot like cyber security, only not. Even the biggest pigs will bounce at some point, and this could be the day for $SWI. Just a thought. Nothing more. Dan

  • just4mo: Hey, just noticed that $SFM Sprouts Farmers Market will replace SolarWinds Inc $SWI in the S&P MidCap 400 after the close of trading today - I would assume that means that ETF's and money managers that mirror this will have to sell $SWI and buy $SMF Does this represent a good trade opportunity ? Just looking for a few idea in this down market
  • domingolnavarro: @just4mo $SFM $SWI $SMF. Dan said to wait. The charts are indicating down. Recall the DME trend line that is down as Dan said. What's your hurry? We haven't gotten "capitulation" selling that can be seen with crazy massive red sell peaks. So, wait. Bloody hands, falling knife.
  • grcjr: @just4mo $SFM $SWI $SMF - I expect this is already priced into the stock so the pros already have their positions.
  • Trixie: @just4mo $SFM $SWI $SMF maybe just a fast day or 2 trade? I have mentioned this one earlier some time last wk and have a small starter in it.. its under the 50 and 200ma that 25ish looks like reasonable resistance to me as I stare at it.. our 50 is sideways and the 200ma going down slightly.. How much upside can it get? I'm starting to wonder? even the 20ma is heading in a downward slope. however we are over the 8..
  • just4mo: @domingolnavarro $SFM $SWI $SMF No "hurry" just looking for ideas... I have only a few positions right now, all are working. but if though it is the "right thing" to do (sit on cash), it doesn't mean I shouldn't look for opportunities Thank you for you insight and response.. I appreciate it.
  • rrandol: $SWI Anyone looking at Solar Winds $SWI. They have a bis from private equity @ $60.10 a share. Stock is trading at $57.95, probably because they are under investigation because of claims that the company is undervalued in the deal. But there is a potential for $2.10 profit if the deal goes through. It's trading at 22% above the 50 dma.

  • issues: @ab2510 $SWI I am changing my mind. $SWI looks to be breaking out. The trend line would be a peak at $49.30 but it's above that and above the 50 day. It's an IBD 50 stock. But we do like the earnings increases. Team at AMTD rates it "reduce". Marketedge rates it "avoid." We don't own it and are not buying it now.

  • cmac: $SWI going crazy on good volume. Earnings are this evening. Maybe someone knows something ?
  • bullmoose: $SWI - This is another stock worth taking a look at here. It's bouncing off the 40-week average and has - for now - surpassed the short-term downtrend line. You can buy with a stop a little under 38.50. That's about a 5% risk from here (was much lower at the open), so go in small if you're buying now.

  • Pratik: - $SWI @DAN, Can you please cover $SWI in Strategy Session today?
  • Tim S: $SWI - just a reminder - if you want @Dan to cover a stock in his strategy session, best way to get that done is to go to the home page of SMM, click on the "Stocks" link, and then type in the ticker you're interested in. Once that page loads, click on the green link to request @Dan's coverage of the stock. Thanks!!
  • pratiksatasia: $SWI - Flagging and seems to be breaking out. any thoughts?
  • rj7150: $SWI - Solarwinds - Breaking out of a volatility #squeeze. Long half position.
  • cmac: A couple interesting volatility #squeeze candidates 1) $SWI may be coming out of a vol #squeeze. I bought a starter position this morning on the pullback. The 50 day has held and is flattening. Volume is increasing. 2) $PVD - a Chilean stock. One of the tighter vol squeezes I've run across. Now that Chile has passed the uncertainty of elections, perhaps we will see this stock move one direction or another. Careful, this is an extremely thinly traded stock.
  • cmac: $SWI - a SMM favorite from a while ago, it may be breaking out of a base. Definitely a vol #squeeze developing, and it is breaking above the 50 day....but its failed at the 50 day before. I may miss this initial move and look to get in on Phase 2. Volume is looking strong too.
  • msb: $SWI @cmac - I posted about this setup a couple of days ago. I went long early this morning. Nice move on the stock today.
  • msb: $SWI - One to put on your watch list. It has been in a down trend for most of this year, but seems to be finding a bottom at support from late 2011. It still needs to push up through the 50 dma. Currently has a nice volatility #squeeze setting up. No position - just watching for more strength.

  • jrsmidt1: I am a first time poster to the forum so hope this properly for me. Back In March @Dan posted a "free video for non members" along with his chart of the day. Two of the stocks @Dan covered that he called "buy and hold-dont trade" type stocks were $MX and SWI. $MX seems to be building a long base since then but $SWI has tanked and is just now starting to show a little life again. Does anyone out there follow these or have any input? I bought a little of each and am just holding, but I can find that @Dan has commented on these to any extent since. Thanks-johnboy
  • rj7150: $SWI and $MX @jrsmidt1 - I do not presently hold either of these stocks. If you have held $SWI though the last month and a half, I would certainly continue to hold it. It looks to me like it has found the bottom and will eventually work its way back up imho. Others with better knowledge of the stock may advise other wise.
  • Forexpro: Re: $MX, $SWI, @Jrsmidt1

    Hi, Jrsmidt1,

Welcome, and yes, you posted perfectly. You comment on $MX, that's it's building a base, seems right on the weekly, but on the daily, it's had some movement. It's been struggling to regain altitude since r ...
  • jrsmidt1: Thanks much to those that commented. This was very helpful to get another perspective. I am pretty picky on what I "buy and hold" although that is all I used to do until I learned that trading was more than knowing the fundamentals which I have always used exclusively used when investing long term. As a retired $CPA, I always go to the fundies first , but now I check the weekly, the daily, the five minute, the $STO etc., as @Dan says. I jumped the gun perhaps with $SWI as I had never seen more than Dans chart of the day so just picked these to and particularly with $SWI, got in at the wrong time and didnt get out as it was a "buy and hold". Maybe @Dan will again comment on these at some point.
  • DAN: Hey jrsmidt1 -- nice to see you here. Yep, you posted properly. :-) I don't think I've covered either of them for a while. $SWI looks like it's done going down...but I'm sorry if you've held it on the way down. $MX does indeed look like it's about to complete a good base. Looks constructive to me. Always have a stop on your positions. Unless you are super committed...always know your exit. And when you $ARE super committed, I always think it's prudent to go in small...and then be willing to buy ONCE on a pullback. If the pullback keeps falling...then you are clearly wrong. Even the super committed need to mind their money. Hope that helps. @Dan
  • jrsmdit1: I am a new subscriber as of Friday and still finding my way around the site and forum. Back about six weeks ago @Dan mentioned $SWI as a "buy and hold' type of stock. I havent seen much since and have bought a time or two on the way down and quit buying. the stock is down 25% fron its high and I have all but given up. Can anyone enlighten me on this stock. @Dan, can you comment on it. I also added $MX as a "buy and hold' and its down but seems to be recovering. I would also appreciate a comment on this. Johnny

    Hi, Stormy,

Well, there will be a bottom, and the current level is 28% below the high. Your risk is well defined by today's low at 43.21, but is there a reason, apart from "Wow, look how far that thing has fallen!" to buy it? ...
  • Stormy: $SWI @FOREXPRO Thanks for your thoughtful response. I agree with you so will wait a bit. Stormy
  • Forexpro: Re: @Stormy You're Welcome, Stormy, I get this stuff wrong all the time, and there's no law, so far as I know, that says that $SWI won't form a "V" pattern off the bottom. The hardest trades sometimes do work out best. Still, as @Dan constantly reminds us, we "expect the expected", and based on the history of this stock, as reflected in the chart, "straight up" doesn't look like a slam dunk. What @Dan also suggests on a regular basis is that when doing something with a fairly fraught risk/reward, "start small", or just take a placeholder position. I find that does help me stay focused when I'm looking for an entry. On the day, the area around 45 has offered resistance; if it breaks higher, perhaps it would be worth picking up a small position just to keep it in view. Again, whatever you decide, best of luck.

I have both $CAT and VALE. Since I bought these as a play on China/Latin America recovery, I will probably hold these also even though they are in my trading account. Undecided on $AIG, $SWI, $MPC, FIVE. I sold $ACI, $FIRE, $RTI, $FEIC today and will not invest proceeds until after the election.
  • Skinflint: BUZZIN DOZEN - Good morning gang and happy weekend to everybody! I mentioned it earlier this week but I don't believe I heard much feedback. I think it is time for a new buzzin' dozen, as most of the original members look quite unappealing to me. ...
  • DragonFly: $SWI - reported, flying up pre-market. I posted a couple of weeks ago about, if you look at the chart, it has done this the last several quarters. Long - happy! so I'm holding till tomorrow's second pop and then sell. "no one day events"
  • boba: $SWI - Oh My!
  • tnt: $SWI hope you changed your mind and sold the pop
  • boba: $SWI - Up from 52 to 56 overnight on good earnings report and now down to 46 on very high volume. What's happening?.
  • philharmonic: $SWI @Dan has been negative on this stock.
  • DragonFly: $SWI - looking at the 1 year chart, I see a big pop up on earnings every quarter then a sideways trade till next earnings. Which s what its been doing the last 3 months. Earnings are on 10/25. Long. History tends to repeat itself.
  • orion: $CRUS @rck89 - not a @textbook double bottom, but i have a support line at 36.60. Might still be digesting the big gap up. Or might have the $AAPL disease! I'm out if drops below 36.60 . . . in mean time still life in the oinker - staying long. Similar story with SWI. Staying long $SWI unless drop below 52.
  • nb8702: $AMT SWI: Those holding these 2 buzzen dozen the charts look favorable to add. $AMT entering a SQZ wiht the MACD/F-Stochastic/Trix signal all in line, Same for $SWI and holding 50ma support.
  • bglee: Buzzin Dozen - @Chessie, the current list of stocks are: $CMCSA, $KORS, $CRUS, $HCP, $GNC, $AMT, $ALXN, $CF, $SWI, CTCT. @Dan started this portfolio in his July 9th Daily Strategy video. The list included $CSTR, $MNST and $PCLN, but they were dumped for underperformance. $CTCT was added later. @Dan devoted three videos to the Buzzin Dozen and he said his purpose was to teach us how to pick stocks and manage a portfolio. The videos are from July 9th, July 16th and the August 18 (Sector Watch). Don't miss the first video, in which he explains the method that he uses to pick his stocks.
  • DAN: ...
$SWI -- if you haven't taken profits on this stock,, do you know something that I don't? It's pulling back after a massive run. At least take a bit off the table and buy it back a couple of bucks lower.

That's it for this morning. Stay alert, ...
  • geewhiz: $PANW @Dan had mentioned this company three weeks go. Entered half position at that time. Somewhat jumpy, but today's move electric. Move my stop up so as not to let a gain become a loss. Did this with $SWI and stock took me out but it (SWI) has not really broken out untit today, since being stopped out.
  • murfields: SQUEEZED---WFC and $SWI charts are interesting for possible breakouts. And $GMAN took a 14% drop to it's lower BB; increases volume the last 3 days--maybe a buy with a close stop at 17.52
  • DragonFly: BD -Ok I understand that . But now that some are at good buy points, ie $HCP, $GNC, $MNST they are not in the dozin anymore. I can't buy stuff like $CTCT and $SWI, $CRUS that were at the top of the channel on day one. Maybe that's my trouble. I just can't buy the high flyers until they get to a good buy point. By then they are broken............
  • stocking: $SWI Just sold a sept 12 60 call for 1.05. Planning to buy the common on any pullback to cover this currently naked call.
