  • Forexpro: Re: $SSSS, $BCSF Hi, Friends, I have holdings in both these tickers, primarily as yield vehicles, even though the charts have been distressed. $SSSS released earnings today, showing a NAV of 12.22 as of quarter-end. The company repurchased roughly 584k shares during the quarter, and has investable cash of $173 mio of a total portfolio of $381 mio. Plenty of firepower can be deployed as opportunities emerge. The stock closed the regular session at 8.57, and last traded in the extended session at 9.10. That would still be rather less than the end of quarter NAV. $BCSF (daily chart attached) reports after the close tomorrow, and is expected to come in flat to 4Q21 at 0.34. Neither of these tickers is heavily covered by the Street (at last count, two analysts for each) so there's room for aberrant moves in response to surprises. As noted, long $SSSS, well long $BCSF. All the best!

  • steve71: @Forexpro $BCSF $SSSS $SPX $SSS There seems to be a lot of negative sentiment about private equity. Your payback issue with a possible recession coming is probably a cause. And apparently there is an unhealthy amount of PE money in China.
  • Forexpro: @steve71 $BCSF $SSSS $SPX $SSS Hey, @Steve71, Here's hoping that you're doing well. The whole PE sector works its magic with borrowed money, and the price of its raw material is likely going up for the foreseeable future. Returns look like being lower, and the opportunity cost of holding merchandise - in this case, companies - that can't be sold at higher prices is also going up. For those companies that are lenders, I'm sure that standards will be tightened. It's been a couple of weeks since I received three credit card solicitations from Chase in the same day's mail. :-) Let's hang on to our dough. All the best!

  • Forexpro: @Forexpro $SSSS, 2-year Yield Hi, Friends, Attached, a chart showing the moves in the 2-year note's yield in 2021. • Forexpro: @Docoof $SSSS Thanks, Docoof, This ticker has very variable earnings, as it is pretty active in taking early stage positions and then exiting holdings as the companies mature/go public. This quarter, for example, the company realized gains of $28.6 mio from its stake in $COUR (which remains a Top 5 holding). It's nice that another $2 in dividends will be paid out - going ex- on Nov 17 - although half of the total amount to be distributed has to be taken as stock. I'll probably take all of mine in that form. This isn't a major holding for me, but I'm enjoying watching it grow. Here's hoping that you're doing well; all the best!
  • Docoof: Congrats @Forexpro — $SSSS very nice.
  • Forexpro: Re: $SSSS Hi, Friends, Due to what I believe is referred to in medical school textbooks as a "br**n fart" I missed the 2.25 dividend back in Aug, and have since gradually rebuilt my holding. This tiny company - there are nine employees including the office manager, who presumably isn't making too many investment decisions - offers a way to get involved in early stage financing. I originally purchased the stock as a way to obtain pre-IPO exposure to $PLTR (a stake that $SSSS has since divested). Earnings are out on Wednesday next (Nov 3), and I'm looking forward to the update on the portfolio. Some additional price appreciation wouldn't hurt, either. Here's hoping that your day is going well; all the best!

  • Forexpro: Re: $PLTR, $SSSS Hi, Friends, I'm pleased by the pop in $PLTR. I'm not long large, but I bought some (as mentioned here at the time) at 22.85 back in July. Not a huge win, but green. I was involved initially via an investment in $SSSS, to which I added most recently at 13.05. This is basically an eight-person team (plus an office manager, who makes nine) that makes early stage investments in closely held companies; unusually, it's offered as a stock, and is thus available to retail investors. This outfit invested in several funding rounds for $PLTR, selling in tranches following the IPO (it still has small exposure, but it was only 0.36 of the portfolio as of Jun 30). If the folks running this can rinse and repeat a few times, I'll be pretty happy. The Jun 30 NAV was 16.56. Hope your day is going well; all the best!

My best friend is a portfolio manager for a large fund, and we got to chatting about Mr. Cohen's (he's President of Palantir) decision to dump 2 mio of his 2.23 mio available shares as soon as the lockup expired. FWIW, my friend's take was "I don't own any in my funds, but if I see a piece of news like that, I have to go with it. I'm hitting the "Sell" button until my finger gets numb." • zman: @Forexpro $PLTR $SSSS $STT $MS In high tech executive compensation is heavily weighted towards stock options so that the exec is motivated to please investors. Options are granted but usually vest over 3 years depending on company’s plan. Back in the day, the option price was often below market...that was sweet. But eventually they were issued at market. And you are right. There are “quiet” periods when you can’t exercise...before earnings, major product announcements, anything considered inside info. And often an exec will exercise the option that is vesting, sell enough to pay the cost of the option, and keep the rest. And once vested you can usually keep them as long as you want before selling. Like you, my retirement has been funded by generous options.

  • Forexpro: Re: $PLTR Hi, Friends, I'm long some of this indirectly via $SSSS, which isn't having all that great a day. It isn't really a great optic when a company's President, exiting the lockup period with 2,203,647 shares, shows his confidence in the company's future and the potential for upside in the stock by selling 2,000,000 shares. The sales, according to Barron's, were done on Feb 18, 19 and 22 at prices ranging from 25.07 to 30.03. No complaint there. However, when a top exec sells 90 percent of his available shares at the first moment he's permitted to do so, at prices that aren't even especially close to the recent high, I think that non-insiders can be forgiven for assuming that his expectations for price gains in the near future aren't all that robust. • Forexpro: Re: $PLTR Hi, Friends, A guy with whom I chatted frequently when he was covering FX for Bloomberg reports on RealMoney that $PLTR has inked a multi-year data crunching agreement with $RIO. $PLTR had, as I recall, 125 contracts in place at the time of its IPO, so these incremental wins matter. Well, perhaps not today, but once the smoke clears. That's particularly true for corporate deals, as I suspect that the hills to be climbed in pursuit of government contracts will be steeper during the Biden administration. It's trading well above the most recently reported NAV (12.46), although that's now an old number (as of 9/30/20). Not hugely long, but long. • Forexpro: @Geewhiz $SSSS Thanks, Geewhiz, I'm glad that this is working for you, and I certainly hope that it continues to do so. In all candor, the sailing on this one hasn't been quite as smooth as I would have liked. Initially, it was a play on the reception of $PLTR's IPO, and that wasn't an instantaneous success. Now, $SSSS seem to be uncoupling from $PLTR to some extent, and in fact $SSSS is involved in some potentially attractive early stage investments, largely in the education field. So, we'll see how it goes. A lot depends on a continued appetite for IPOs on the part of investors, but that doesn't seem a crazy bet at this point. The attached chart of $SSS has $PLTR's price action overlaid as a solid black line. Take care, and best wishes right back at you and yours for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2021!
