  • Pokersmith: #ChinaCarSales Japanese automakers Honda Motor Co Ltd($HMC), Nissan Motor Co Ltd($NSANF) and Toyota Motor Corp($TM) saw their sales in China tumble in September as a chip shortage hit vehicle production in the world's biggest car market. Honda said it sold 121,448 vehicles in China last month, down 28% from a year earlier due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a shortage of components. Nissan said it sold 104,443 cars, down 26%, due to "external headwind including the ongoing pandemic, cross-industry material shortages, slowdowns, and increased competition." Toyota said it sold 115,000 cars, down 36%. Separately, U.S. automaker General Motors Co($GM), which only reports quarterly China sales, said it sold over 623,000 in July through September, down 19% from the same period last year, "impacted by the ongoing global semiconductor supply chain disruption."

  • Ajax4Hire: @bRobert $TSLA Not sure how that is different from many other stocks. $TSLA does have a "cult-of-personality" with the vocal champions, primarily the CEO, Elon Musk; but $TSLA is also the biggest Electric Vehicle company on the planet. Additonally, $TSLA is a battery manufacture, a dominant in Solar Power producer. So many equate the CEO personality with the fundamentals of the underlying company. Primary US car makers: $GM-General Motors, $F-Ford, $FCAM(Chrysler/Dodge) and others($TM-Toyota, $HMC-Honda, $VLKAF-Volkswagon, etc.) never had real incentive to change. $TSLA started out as a 21st century vehicle maker(EV). That is why I am bullish(long-term) on $TSLA-Tesla.

  • Ajax4Hire: @joelsg1 $TSLA I have mentioned before but bears repeating; $TSLA-Tesla is a battery company disguised as a car manufacture. $TSLA is the also leader in the Electric Vehicle(EV) category; single-handedly creating a new market where $GM, $F-Ford, $TM-Totota, $FUJHF-Subaru, $HMC-Honda and others lag. Additionally, $TSLA is also a Solar Power($SCTY-Solar City) company. California mandates Solar Power and forcing all EV by 2035 giving $TSLA a huge built-in market. "As CA goes so goes the USA", MegaTrends $TSLA demand outstrips production(both EV and Solar Power). If $TSLA could produce more, $TSLA could make more profit. I finish by quoting Sandy Munro: "$TSLA lies, they always UNDER-STATE their abilities" EV range, capacity, acceleration all better than quoted by $TSLA. $TSLA is a new economy company for the new decade. Yes, Elon Musk can cloud analysis $TSLA. Seek truth from facts. Deng Xiaoping

  • Lou: @debeers $HMC has been beaten down, is climbing out of the penalty box, selling lots of cars and the world market is wide open to it. Right price points, good product, and lots of people who never had a car are now aspiring to car ownership. Chart seems to be improving and I'm doing well from my original entry in April when it was badly beaten down. Now seems to be a good time to press - so I did a couple days ago. Didn't want to post then because I expected to be called out on it - more confidence now.

"This is a big deal as Renesas is a huge supplier and major auto makers depend on it," said Tsuyoshi Segawa, equity strategist at Mizuho Securities. There were fears that global production could be hobbled if the shutdown of the plant, which makes a quarter of the company's auto microcontrollers, were prolonged. Auto makers, which rely on Renesas for microcontrollers, were also boosted by the report, with Honda Motor Co. rising 3.3% and Toyota Motor Corp. closing 1.4% up.

  • galcebo: $F & GM- Seems to me, that in addition to all the reasons stated for both of these moving up today, the main one was probably due to the disruption in Japanese auto industry and auto parts manufacturing which have had to close many of their plants. See $TM, $HMC, Nissan and even Volvo (parts plants). Even though many are assembled elsewhere more than 35-50% of the parts are/were made in Japan. The US auto makers should benefit from these very sad and tragic events since it seems that it will be along time for Japan to get back on its feet from these Natural disasters. My prayers to those affected. (non the less, long $F, before these events, may add Monday). Fundies do matter. Safe weekend.

  • 20yrtrader: That was a fair amount of work. One should note that about 1/3 of those were mentioned on Mad Money, a few on Fast Money thus a gap will usually occur. If you notice and care to take the time, noting the mention will help frame the reasoning behind the gaps. Both shows point out earnings beats and #Cramer will often bring in the CEO. $BKS was on saying they were not threatened by either the ipad or Borders (not joining Borders); $DHI was on talking about the earnings beat and housing bottom; $WHR has been pumped a number of times by #Cramer: $HMC jumped on TM's bad news, but no one seems to notice that $HMC also came out with the same issue, same supplier, as did $F very quietly on "2 older models"; $NWSA on earnings beat on #CNBC. Thanks for bringing up the list on a down week. Cheers!

  • JamesLutfy: @Dan, $HMC, $TM You were talking about importers. Do you think Honda and Toyota could count as importers that could significantly strengthen from a stronger dollar/weaker yen? If the consumer does better, I think their earnings could definitely strengthen with the currency shifts.
  • JamesLutfy: Japan, $USD, $HMC, $TM, $EWJ, $CAJ, $MTU, NTDOY It seems to me that Japan will not allow deflation to afflict their economy. Along with this is the fact that people may start to flood US markets in 2010, because Europe and emerging markets aren't really steady investments for many reasons. Much of Europe is even more bankrupt than we are. Emerging markets like China and Brazil are not friendly to foreign investors. Others like Dubai are non-transparent and inexperienced in dealing with financial crisis. This would lead to a stronger dollar and weaken USD/YEN pair at the very least. Given these facts, it may be a good time to buy things like Honda, Toyota, Canon, Nintendo, and Mitsubishi #Financials. These are about 15% of the Japan etf, EWJ. If the US consumer bounces back, it could help the Japanese a lot. A weaker yen could also help their profit margins. Thoughts?

We spend 700 billion on TARP, but when we spend less than 1% of that for Cash for Clunkers there is outrage? Buy $F, $HMC, $TM, $TTM, and other companies - you will profit from it. Just like you probably have profited from the fact that the governme ...
  • snmtraders: $TM and $HMC will benefit
  • Ian: Don't see any beauty in the $TM and $HMC stock charts even if they have emotional appeal as companies. On the other hand, $F was at $0.99 late last month and $3.29 now. Drive a Ford Escape and a Honda Fit but only long F. @Ian @Ian
  • josephcollins: Ron "who me?" Gettelfinger did make one good point recently. $TM and $HMC (and probably other transplants) got subsidies from the states where they operate in the form of tax abatements and grants for "job creation". I am so sick of governments buying jobs (not just auto jobs) with tax dollars I'm ready to break out the torches and pitchforks.

These are Honda (HMC) and Toyota (TM). At first I rejected these ideas because I thought "Who wants a consumer stock when the consumer is getting hammered by rising mortgage rates and higher gasoline prices"? But it turns out that the same dynamic ...
