  • Wolf: @Dan $KKR $ARES #Limited-Partnership. Your chart shows "LP" after the names. I didn't consider these because I don't like LP tax headaches. • jlutzkanin: @jlutzkanin $ARES It bounced and then blew straight thru. Stopped out
  • sierramp: I don't understand this company and the fundies are scary but the chart is interesting $ARES
  • steve71: @sierramp $ARES $ARES is a private equity firm in NYC and LA. We have had family money with them for years and generally see an average 15% yearly return. Note - we are NOT buying stock. We are putting in money when the firm announces a periodic capital raise. They do their PE deals and 3-5 years later return capital to investors. The stock itself is another story. Profits are basically what the greedy, black heart partners decide to leave for the rube investors. Ares was privately held and the partners wanted even MORE money so they decided go public. When you buy the stock you are buying something that the insiders wanted to sell. $ARCC is the BDC arm of Ares. A different story, $ARCC has an OK chart and a 9% yield. I do hold that because it is liquid as opposed to the Ares investment.
  • sierramp: @steve71 $ARES $ARCC Very interesting Steve, thank you very much. I appreciate your knowledgeable take on it.
  • Bob G: $ARES Does anyone like the Tuesday breakout of $ARES that tested and continued through the week? Above avg. vol today on a relatively quiet day? Enter with a stop around $25.90?
  • steve71: $ARCC $ARES $ARCC, the BDC arm of Ares, is ex-div today. Sitting on the 50 dma - a good buy point and I am adding to one account. Yield 9%. I have a lot of direct experience with Ares
  • steve71: @mepcc1 $ARCC Thanks for that. ARES (private equity) and ARCC (BDC - business development) are doing great. First the big banks were forced to exit those business lines after 2009. Then central bank easing and sovereign wealth funds generated a flood of money looking for a home. $ARES upside may be limited as assets to purchase are getting expensive. $ARCC is golden unless Trump and Mnuchin revisit banking laws.
  • steve71: @mopick $BX $APO $ARCC $ARES $BX $CG KKR $OAK Private equity in general is not participating. From personal experience I think that buying these stocks is tough. The charts are very volatile. The returns are highly lumpy, depending on which companies the partners just sold. Better is to just directly invest WITH the private equity firm. Returns have been about 15-20% yearly over multiple years. The drawback is lack of liquidity.
  • steve71: @Bridget $APO $APO $ARCC $ARES $BX $CG $KKR $OAK Right. Of the publicly traded private equity firms Apollo has the nicest combination of chart and yield. Reports 11/1. We have invested in Ares equity rounds for several years with very good returns. But I wouldn't touch the stock. The PE firms make some seemingly arbitrary choices in November - how much to reward the partners vs. how much to reward the stockholders. Guess who wins?
  • steve71: $BX $ARES $FND cmaxwel1 mentioned Blackstone, down slightly after earnings. With a constructive chart and a 10% yield, any dip seems an opportunity. Private equity should do well as they sell portfolio companies into an inflated market. The PE firms are swimming in cash as big investors look for yield. The problem is where to invest. Ares reports 8/4. Their $FND IPO was a huge success for them. Their cost basis makes that one investment a ten bagger. Unfortunately they also acquired Neiman Marcus in 2013. Not so good.
  • mopick: @steve71 $BX $ARES $FND Agree with you on $BX. Sold half of my position yesterday. As expected, they were a bit short on earnings but exceeded on revenue. Looking to add once the stock shows some strength.
  • steve71: $FND post IPO breakout to ATH. I have written about this many times, including pre-IPO. While retail in general is heavy, this is a retail stock with 20% yearly growth and a long runway. A refuge from Amazon. The product has to be seen in person, and an order weighs a ton. So probably buyers who want retail and building exposure are coming in. One caveat is that the company was taken public by PE firm Ares Management. $ARES still owns 90% of the shares, a huge overhang. Word is that they plan to slowly sell shares over years. But they do have the ability to dump shares and bury the stock. Unlikely, but possible.
  • steve71: $FND $ARES At the IPO yesterday, NYSE had 10 traders handling the bids for the initial tranche of shares. IPO was priced at 21. Opening was delayed 25" as the bid/ask as organized. Shares opened at 30.25, and closed around 32. Ares owned 70% of the IPO, yielding about $100M. Better yet, they still own 56M shares. The $10 bump over the IPO pricing adds another $560M for them. Must have been a cheery ride in the G-5 back to LA. The expectation is that shares may retreat to the mid to high 20s. Then a multi-year uptrend is likely, powered by a near 30% growth rate. FND is Amazon-proof for now. Buyers want to see stone tiles in person. And they're too heavy to Prime ship.
  • steve71: $APO $ARCC $ARES $BX $CG $KKR $OAK Private Equity names are having a day. The very general model for these names is to acquire private companies, polish them for 5 years, then resell to other PE or take them public. As assets are being re-priced in this market, the PE holdings are suddenly worth more. All pay excellent dividends. Earnings reports can be a problem because the returns are extremely lumpy over time.
  • steve71: $HIG $ARES Added to Hartford at 41.90 Ares up today. 6% yield. NP.
  • steve71: @Alexandra $ARES $BKCC I am precluded from owning $ARES or $ARCC. But I hear some of their moves, and believe they will do well. The dividend is about 6%. But again, I don't own it. So take what I say with a grain of salt. BTW, there is another way of participating. It requires a financial advisor with some connections. PE firms get most of their investable capital from funding raises. $ARES last tranche raised several billion dollars in a few months. The money comes from sovereign wealth funds, institutions and wealthy individuals. Their money is tied up for several years. But their returns often (not always) average more than 20%/year after expenses. So if you have $100M sitting around, and you won't need it for a few years...
  • Alexandra: @steve71 $ARES $BKCC $ARCC Interesting. What's a sovereign wealth fund ?

  • big_al: @steve71 $ARES What do you mean by private equity?
  • Alexandra: @big_al $ARES I think it means businesses that aren't publically traded on the NYSE.
  • steve71: @Alexandra $ARES Private equity firms may or may not be publicly traded. $ARES is, hence the symbol. Their traditional business model was to buy small/medium size companies, combine them, spin stuff out and resell after five years. There are some ...
  • gwenzee: @steve71 $ARES $BKCC Sounds a little like a modern day Mafia in many respects. AAh, the almighty dollar.
  • big_al: @steve71 $ARES $BKCC Thanks for the explanation!
  • Alexandra: @steve71 $ARES $BKCC Thanks for the explanation. So do you own any ? What's the dividend ?
  • steve71: $ARES Adding @ 17.58. Private equity. Much of the business lending previously done by money center banks has moved to private equity. Ares also specializes in debt, as well as the usual buyout activity. Huge margins.
  • jan2138: @JJT1 $PSEC I believe $ARES is still an independent company.
  • JJT1: @jan2138 $PSEC $ARES You are correct. After $PSEC bought Patriot Capital in 09 they were trying to buy Allied Capital and were quite bitter when Allied merged with Ares in early 2010.
