  • msb: Markets @career2 - I am thinking this is a significant top in the @Russell 2000. My charts show the $IWM is a little ahead of the NASD, S&P500 and the Dow in peaking. I am using the $ADX indicator on the monthly chart to reach that conclusion. I ...

  • murfields: An ANALYST VIEW for Monday: "The overnight S&P futures are currently +9.50. Today will probably be a bear market rally session. The large up open will likely bottom early and the gains will be extended amid light trading volume. A reduction in pessimsim , which will be reflected via a drop in put demand and the VXO today, should lead to weakness tomorrow. Today is a good session to avoid. The market's underlying condition remains weak and the bulls are only capable of a sentiment driven rally." @Murfields says observe $BPNYA; Bullish percent index has decreased from 70 to 58 in the last 30 days with RSI and $ADX both indicators saying bearish. May not have the usual December up-trend.
  • msb: $FDO - Coming out of a volatility expansion. 20 dma > 50 dma > 200 dma. $ADX is strengthening. Looks to be working. Long since this morning.

  • BuffaloBill: ALERT ! Heiken-Ashi Candlesticks, Good Morning 10:45 on the West coast, I have changed my Stock Charts, now using Heiken-Ashi Candlesticks, They are much easier to read and see trend change in all charts and give great signals as to change from trend. These Japanese candlesticks are a definite up grade. For me these are easier to make informed decisions. - http://www.investopedia.com/articles/technical/04/092204.asp#axzz1s2Mtg67K - I also use $ADX 10 13 %D 5, BOP looking for quite institutional activity, and Stoc 12% K3 %D5 Iam using $TC 2000 in all time frames. I have shown the charts to my non technician wife she cannot pick buy and sell points on a normal candlestick chart, however, with the Heiken-Ashi Upgrade she immediately gets it. Thaks for all your help in SMM Ron
  • lclarkc: $NFLX - Earnings 1/25. Lock in profits and tighten stops. Stoc over brought, $ADX high. I would not hold over earnings.
  • DragonFly: $LEN - @Dan covered the home builders last night. Take a look at LEN. For those of us that follow the @Ichimoku cloud, $LEN just poked out of the cloud yesterday, with super volume, very bullish buy signal, $ADX is under 20. I'm going to try and pick some up today if timing permits.
  • neil375: $EXPE - Expedia Is showing me a buy. Perhaps someone else might opine? Here's what I'm seeing: DMI on the weekly is starting to show an uptrend. $ADX is just starting to hook upward ( a trend starting). %R is showing an upward trend on all the time frames. It's above the upper Bollinger Band and making new highs. MACD is encouraging. There is a lot of open interest in the in-the -money calls out to October. .And it's up on a down day. I think @Dan might have mentioned this stock some time back.) I'm going to take a position with calls at the end of the day. Hoping to get a sell off and a little better price.
  • psjakeyoung: RIMM thanks for the feed back, i was on the same side, it jsut now, on the daily chart the MACD is kind of hook up now, and the $ADX trend strength is out of the DI-, just something that to be aware a abit, still think the company has not be able to change in short time frame

  • bert953: @Hwyflier - Awesome message! I'm especially feeling the part about morning spikes that hit stops and then take off again, causing you to go back in at a higher cost basis. I've been working the daily rotation on a few names, mainly $PCLN & $CRR, but my account says "Mr market's not trending" (The $ADX indicator agrees, but a quick look at it says the $SPY is about to turn up, $DIA & $QQQ have turned up already - interesting!!)
  • sandhu1221: $JMBA - Guys I posted this couple days ago too, but $JMBA is doing great out of volatility #squeeze on daily chart, However, weekly is VS now, $JMBA is going higher with summer coming and so much positive news. $ADX is bullish in weekly, weekly volume has picked up, RSI is a buy. I would suggest to get in with any pullback. Any questions, please contact me at jassa_18 yahoo.com
  • jolinla: gl $ADX is the average directional index and consists of the two lines that are the directional movement indicators. Beats me how they derive them but it seems to work. You can find it in $TC 2000. Something similar is the DXI indicators which I think you can find in Stock Charts. gl
  • psjakeyoung: $CRUS ,50 sma is around 21.8+ look like the support around 20+ is pretty strong, MACD looks like to hook up. $ADX at 17 due to DI- selling is decreasing and DI+ is above DI- buying is coming back
  • crumholtz: $COMPQ Just an observation from yesterday and today. The technical indicators I am looking at (MACD, $ADX specifically) it looks like things in tech are starting to push to the positive. I'm not jumping up and down (and won't until we push past the 50 day and test it a bit) but it looks like tech is starting to warm up a little more at least.
  • pdocker: SLE - BB #squeeze less than 3%. Month long line pattern acting as a launch pad. 10,20,50 XMA acting as support. Stochs heading up, MACD just crossing up. $ADX has reset and is waiting for a move. All that is needed now is volume to pump up.
  • psjakeyoung: forgot to mention, about $LVS daily chart $LVS RSI still below 50 around 47 now, need to be watching that MACD around 0 , $ADX below 20 , no clear trend forming, i only consider a trade, not plan to hold long, there are several resistance above 46.20 think $LVS trade in range 44~50, since end of 2010 til now $LVS did trade in range 18~22 around end of 2009 til early 2010 one trade that @Dan mention, i think $SWN, look nice
  • psjakeyoung: $KOG, new to this forum, entry point at 5.72, by using the fib retracement intraday chart (100% )HOD was at 5.78, LOD,(0%) 5.51, 61.8% was at 5.67, projection 1.618% 5.93 now the stock price is 5.920 on a daily chart today's it forming a bullish engulfing pattern, but RSI still below 50, MACD still heading down, but signal and line are closing around 0. $ADX around 32, D- is heading down, D+ is pulling up i need some opinion on this stock thanks

Two things (maybe more) toward my argument: ONE: I struggle to find many red bars in the near past i.e. good stocks keep going and don't go down when you think they might. TWO: As @DAN says, "Sometimes you just gotta hold your nose and/or ge ...
  • unremitting3: $CNX hey @Poppy, help me out. What did I say that was wrong or overstated? Was it the word "slightly?" The essence of what I am trying to say is that the WEEKLY is key for first analysis and the DAILY (as @DAN says) times the trade. The only thing that really concerned me was the 5 day EMA. The DMI and $ADX are showing fire in the engine room. As of this writing, my position is UP 20% and although it is FEB OTM $CALL, I will cash out in next few days unless it explodes. Open to suggestions but give me some specifics where I missed something so I can respond. Thanks.
  • jolinla: $NLY dirk, I hadn't realized that stocksharts had that feature until you posted it. Thanks. I use stockcharts occasionally to check ATR's or for a clearer chart of $ADX crossovers, but I have a lot of time and lists invested in $TC 2000 so I rarely look at stockcharts.
  • unremitting3: $X Marks the spot Retreat to Upper BB on Weekly & moving out of VS. On the daily, 'Your X' is consolidating BUT as with all Xs, the RISK is now defined :o)) if it were only that easy. So, RISK is looking to be ~ 57.75. DMI and $ADX are looking good and stable. Stnd Deviation/vol moves are setting up beautifully. Good volumes. What's not to like about your 'X' ???? Then again, in any relationship, timing was everything.

  • jolinla: $AKAM I have been accumulating for the past four days. The 20 day ma seems to have relevance and the OBV shows accumulation at these levels. I also look at $ADX cross overs which seems to show extreme divergences which have proven to be turning points for this stock in the past (March, May, July and August). On the negative side, the stock has had a long run and the 50 day ma shows a rounding top. I am going to look closely when and if it gets back to the 50 day ma and will let it go if it fails that or fails its recent low where I've placed my stops. GL @jolinla
  • jolinla: ...

  • jolinla: $AMT Also stopped out. I try to confirm my views with a 3-day chart. It is a good way of dealing with what @Dan calls the three day rule, although I do it for different reasons...mostly that it seems to work. I have set the moving averages to equate ...
  • Richk23: $GS - Volitility #Squeeze & breakout from upper line of down trend channel Looks like $GS is in a Volitility #Squeeze. It has also broke above the upper line of the down-trend channel established from the October high's 7 EMA crossing over the 13 SMA - (positive development) Stochstics seem to be turning positive and $ADX is too I like $GS here for a continued move higher (I think we have a good tradeable bottom here) @DAN - could you cover $GS in your next video or the weekend update -- thanks

  • Bob: .. I'm not so sure on this one. Definitely would not say it's window dressing as it is in a good up trend since April with higher lows and price moving along the upper BB a couple of times. BB's look to be expanding, $ADX showing some direction strength, OBV and $ATR good trend, major trend lines in the right places, etc. It will be good to watch...it's a grinder. Not too sure about the last hour of trading today though.
  • epag1: @Strucman: $GD may be a good short , but as you have noted ....3 down days. I watch TSV indicator on Worden's charts and it has give sell signal . MACD crossed down and $ADX sell dignal. But I would prefer to short closer to 200 on bounce, then followed by renewed selling.
  • darupert: @Bob - I really liked that analysis. Of the secondary indicators that you are showing on that chart.. $ADX, %D, MACD... which do you find to be most useful? Dave
  • dinosaurrs: @Bob (ZBRA): Thanks - I'll follow up on $ADX indicator. Since Oct., a slightly lower price level has unleashed aggressive sellers over and over. With the lower volume and higher price, decreasing volatility, and recent @zig/zag-consolidate cycles I'm figuring sellers are less aggressive but no change to patient bulls. No chase or buy on pop, it either hits limit or not.
  • Bob: ... Great! Well first, and humbly, don't try to emulate me...what you are doing is great and you can choose to add or subtract stuff that works for you for a reason. So if $ADX, $ATR, etc. make no sense just go learn about them and from there, choo ...
  • wecap: I am in PCX. This is the way I see it. People are just starting to accumulate. Strong up trend. No real resistance until the 200 day moving day average. Just breaking out of the bollingers. The $ADX is above 20. Was going to take profits at the close. But I think it will run higher. Hero is similiar. I might buy on Monday
  • Forexpro: Hi, @Bob, Hope all is well. You appear to have a good system! I'm about to go shower to get some tiretracks off my back. The maker appears to be an outfit called "Amazing", 'cause their logo is "AMZN". With regard to $ADX (you said I should come back with questions; no good deed goes unpunished), 14 increments seems to be the default setting. Have you experimented with different settings using various investment timeframes, by any chance? Thanks as always for your help.
  • Forexpro: Hi, @Bob, "Trading is really a ton of fun ..." Dunno, it has felt suspiciously like work at times this week. I was up doing homework later than my high schooler, to her vast amusement. Looking forward to perusing the $ADX link that you were kind enough to provide earlier this week. Take care.
  • Bob: ...
Neither of those are stand alone warnings but do suggest some degree of caution. The next indicator I'll be looking for is a rollover of the positive $ADX line and turn up of the negative line. At that point, I'll be tightening the stop.

  • Forexpro: 'Morning, @Bob, Intrigued by your query about $ADX yesterday, and just got an offer from my ever-optimistic friends at Traders Library for a $DVD set on that very topic from @Chuck LeBeau, who shouldn't include close-ups of himself with his marketing material. Do you know this guy's work, by any chance? Thanks much.
  • tradamom: @Bob: thanks for the explanation on $ADX from yesterday and yes it was very helpful. Do you also use telecharts in addition to stockcharts.com? thanks for the info tradamom
  • tradamom: @Bob: great discussion on channel trading and charts. I use stockcharts too. but i don't use $ADX since I don't really get it. I use %K, OBV and MACD. You explained it all so clearly though. thanks tradamom p.s. I have always liked trading RIMM and missed this one.
  • Bob: Tradamom $ADX in a nutshell: 1. Red over Green (or climbing)- down trending trade (price) 2. Green over Red (or climbing) - up trending trade (price) 3. Black line indicates strength of the move. 4. If Black line is below 20-25, disregard the whole thing. 5. Works best for longer term trades and after a price sideways movement and not so well with "V" shaped patterns -- but a good quick look indicator anytime. Help?
  • Bob: @Brian, Realy good post, Partner. One of the toughest things to do is recognize good setups as they are happening, especially when we are predisposed to a weak market. By using the price and volume (first) and then the MACD, $ADX and STOC in the classical "crossing" indicators sense, some very good trades are poking their heads out of the sand.

  • dha3936420: At 8:30am we tested support from yesterday and it snapped back, that was bullish. Then we had a volatility #squeeze on the hourly charts and it fired off long at noon, that was bullish. Then, we had already tested 865 yesterday. First test is a fade, second/third means go with the trend. We broke through that resistance level starting from a closer support point Then I've notice that fast moves tend to run out of steam quickly. You can see this on an intra-day chart, when the $ADX peaks, you get reversals. Gets tired after a fast sprint. When you have slow churning in one direction, it suggests demand is gradually overwhelming supply and like an infantry in the army, marching forward.

  • Bob: Staples (SYNA) Couple of quick notes. The current pattern is a somewhat sloppy cup with a handle...but not that sloppy. Also the $ADX is showing very good positive trend strength. It's also trading right close to that early June high. So all that looks favorable for a continued move up. But... then there is the risk factor that after earnings (good or bad) it could drop significantly tomorrow. Or it might go up, but which way would it be likely to move the most? Speculation, I know... but if I held it, I'd lighten the position and possibly even get out and like it again tomorrow at a cheaper price or a slightly higher one. Make any sense ??
  • Bob: @Dan -- Others, Just for fun, set up the $ADX indicator with the 14 default reset to 8 and then look at the ags. That too suggests the trend is not terribly positive. Just another tool in the box....
  • Bob: @Smita, I don't know if you refer to the $ADX indicator. I use it as a cross-check for entries/exits and reset the default 14 to 8 so I get a bit more action from the $ADX line on a 60 period chart. Take a look at the indexes using it and you'll see that the $IYY has good indcations while $SPY, $DIA and QQQQ are about to enter the zone. (I use above 25 for the $ADX with the positive over negative.) Former $FSL stock $LLL is also looking very good. :) -@Bob (edited mistype on symbol)
  • Bob: @Kingdend .. if you're around tonight, gimme a shout. I'd like to show you something on $PBR using an $ADX indicator that may be very helpful to you. We'll be looking at this 60 period chart: http://tinyurl.com/6kcryx -@Bob
  • Bob: @DAN Thanks for the relook and you know as much as I both "want" $BIDU to be recovering and see some indicators that is may be, the MACD, price, and $ADX taken in conjunction still tell me it's not there yet and at best is meandering without a good trend. I don't usually go to the $ADX but this time it really shows what $BIDU is really doing...GOOG on the other hand, while "working" is in much better shape wouldn't you agree ??
  • realestate: Yesterday I traded in and out of $FLS 2 times for a wash each time. I was using the $ADX and breakouts on volatility #squeeze to signal a buy point. Granted I gave very little room for price to move much mainly because of position size and daytrade nature in yesterdays rough environment. So accuracy (or maybe risk management) was very important. Anyone know how to better use the $ADX to cut down on false signals. Example: stock was in an uptrend and $ADX gave false trend reversal; -D was rising crossing the +D while $ADX was dropping from above to below 40. The price would drop like .45 and then take off leaving me exiting the position.
  • DAN: realestate: thanks for sharing those trades. My opinion is that $ADX is not particularly helpful for daytrading. By nature, it is a lagging indicator (virtually all indicators are), and that will wreak havoc on your trading. Better to use things l ...
