  • Lou: I haven't been very active in the market lately, so I haven't had anything to post. This morning I added to $TLT and am adding a little to $WFRD by having sold some OTM puts for Friday (earnings 4/24).

  • Lou: @debeers $FTI $VLO - they're both great performers. Some like chocolate and some vanilla. I like $FTI because I'm sitting on massive appreciation, sold half (no regrets - got all of my money out from the whole investment) at around 18, and I think $FTI is small enough for a tuck-in merger by a larger company, I own $WFRD (a relatively smaller stake) and believe a combination of the two could occur as they service the same off-shore customers side by side.

  • Lou: @debeers $FTI $VLO $WFRD - I absolutely don't blame you for liking $VLO - but they are in different businesses and I'm not sure why you're comparing them. $FTI works in the deep oceans and $VLO is a downstream company, manufactures, refines, etc. I'm absolutely not criticizing your investment in $VLO (wish i owned some) and not saying that $FTI is the best investment ever, I'm just saying that it's working for me. I'm sure some here would say that they've done better with $NVDA than I've done with $FTI. Bully for them too and I envy them as well. Stay well!

If you are a senior, think about changing your CPA rather than not owning MLPs in your TAXABLE account, but not in an IRA or similar. MLPs pay you a nice tax deferred distribution, reducing your cost basis. and, if held until your death, your estate gets a step up in basis. If distributions exhaust your basis before your death, the excess is treated as a capital gain, LT or ST, depending on when you purchased the MLP units. I love my MLPs, am very long $ET, which produces more quarterly cash flow from distributions than I'll ever spend, and $EPD which is the creme de la creme of the genre. As I said above, I'd rather change CPAs than not own my MLPs.

  • DAN: @TeslaCoil $WFRD I wouldn't. It's in a pretty faulty base and has run 24% over the past couple of weeks. While it certainly might break out, I think it's a low probability trade. Just my opinion, of course.

  • DAN: @TeslaCoil $WFRD YEp. That's the problem with faulty base breakouts -- your stop has to be really low, and that's a lot of risk for a likely small reward.
  • Lou: While I would like to go into the weekend with some cash in my market accounts, it isn’t going to happen. I’m fully invested, I like everything I’m holding, all of my equities are green today with minor exceptions of $VKTX, $WFRD and $CZR (which I don’t want so sell), and I don’t want to incur margin debt. Unlike others, I’m a firm believer in letting profits run, so I don’t take some off because a position is profitable. I’d rather do that if I see a reversal and stops get hit. So I may as well call it a day/week. On that note, enjoy the weekend all.

And I respect that. Opinions among very smart people will definitely vary. While I believe that everyone should think for themselves, I also believe that having an open mind goes hand in hand with an opinion. I'm pretty opinionated about certain things, but I am always willing to alter my opinion when I get new information. I view it like trading. When the stock shows you that you are wrong, stubbornness will penalize you dearly. But if you adjust your opinion on the trade to reflect new, conflicting information, be become right. A lot of folks don't seem to see it that way. It's an individual choice for sure. :-)

While the market doesn't open for another 15 minutes or so, I wanted to let you know that I'll be putting Weatherford International ($WFRD) on the Active Trade List this morning. It is in the Oil & Gas Services industry, which is one of the top groups in the market these days. It will join $OII $FANG $TDW $BKR and $COP. Basis: 95.12 Stop: 86.35 I have placed the stop just a bit below the middle Bollinger Band, but you should choose your own stop based on your appetite for risk. The entire group of stocks have really solid patterns, so there is widespread institutional interest in all of the stocks we are in. Make sure you have a risk management plan in place and avoid chasing this at the open. It has only traded 11,800 shares this morning, so the opening can be a bit unpredictable. --Dan
