It may well make more sense for EU and Japan car makers to make cars in their countries and ship here with a lower 15% tariff than to have a plant here and endure 50% tariffs on those metals. - joelsg1: $TSLA Idiotic tariff uncertainty about copper hurts $TSLA and other EV makers which use copper in batteries, wiring and rotors, about 80-100 lbs. per vehicle, also in Powerwalls. Obvious US-based copper supplier is $FCX, which Stifel raised to $56, but not up today. Maybe it's more TACO unless/until the Courts block this overreach. But in the meantime, think $TSLA could surprise with commentary on E call 7/23 now that Q2 delivery numbers are out and with strong demand in Q3 for the new Y everywhere, Grok being added to vehicle and with pull-forward in US with $7500 credit expiring 9/30. Now below 200d toward lower part of $275-375 range where I may sell downside puts and/or add.
- woodman: @joelsg1 $TSLA $FCX - Grok getting pounded around the world for its anti-semetic answers, among other things. Not something I need to hear in my car. But you're right on the mark with the copper needed for EV vehicles. The passed budget bill, in addition, is pretty unfriendly to green energy in general and EV vehicles specifically. Combined with tariffs and Musk's off the rails relationship with Trump....

- woodman: @cgendro1 $FCX - $HBM has been my primary copper stock. It's performed very well. Also been in $ERO. HBM provided a nice earnings report this morning. I held my shares through. HudBay Minerals (HBM) reported earnings of $0.16 per share on revenue of $524.99 million for the first quarter ended March 2024. The consensus earnings estimate was $0.03 per share on revenue of $463.69 million. The Earnings Whisper number was $0.05 per share. The company beat expectations by 220.00% while revenue grew 77.83% on a year-over-year basis. HudBay Minerals Inc is an integrated mining company. With assets in North and South America, it produces copper concentrate and zinc metal and is focused on the discovery, production and marketing of base and precious metals.

- woodman: #Copper has been back on the upswing. $FCX $SCCO have made their ways back to recent highs. $HBM, which I've just been holding since beginning of the month, never pulled back. It just drifted to the 20d. I'm still in $ERO as well (I held it and HBM over my vacation). ERO pulled back decently to the 50d but moved right back up.
