  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR For those of you trading or in it for the l.t., it goes ex on Monday. I will be interested to see how it behaves. Lots of interest in the cash and stock dividends.
  • jan2138: @grcjr $stairm01 $VGR Be careful. There are a lot of dividend chasers out there and when it goes ex, it may fall back. This has been good for a trade recently but long term, be careful.
  • grcjr: @jan2138 $stairm01 $VGR - many of us held this one in the past. I closed out my final block a year ago. The move since late August has been very tempting. I've not pulled the trigger.
  • stairm01: $VGR Continuing it's run from July 25. Ex-Div date is 9/16 paying 0.40 (12.1%). I've been long stock taking some off and on on the run up. I have posted on this over the past month as has JAN 2138,
  • jan2138: @stairm01 $VGR Please, just don't stay long, too long. Ex-date 9/16/19.
  • stairm01: $VGR Continues to step higher since it has moved above the 200 dma. Dividend presently 12.6%. Long stock.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR Here is the great news I always waited for like it was Christmas Eve when I had a large position in this one. Notice I said "had". They have declared another .40 qtly. cash dividend + the usual annual 5% stock dividend. This puts the cash yield @ 13.79% and if you add in the 5% stock dividend, the yield is astronomical. I wasn't sure they could continue it but they have. Good news for those still long.
  • jan2138: @mikespear $MO Is not one I follow and since I exited $VGR, my only involvement in tobacco stocks over the years, I decided to stay away from them. Also, the 7.59% yield is a bit low for me as an entry yield. If on entry, a ticker is yielding in the high 8's or more and with an increase in the share price over time, the yield drops to 4,5,6%, I am happy for obvious reasons.
  • stairm01: $VGR Stopped out today at a 9% return. Entered on Aug. 9. Will watch for re-entry point.
  • stairm01: $VGR High yielding stock. Broke above the 200 dma out of a VS on July 26, pulled back in a phase 2 and now has broken out above the initial phase 1 move. I've been long stock since Aug 9 after earnings as I posted last week. 12% plus dividend.
  • jan2138: @stairm01 $VGR Are you aware of the fundies on this one. I was long it for many years and then sold it back when it was about a point higher than where it is now. I had a great run collecting the .40 dividend and the annual 5% stock dividend along the way. But the question has been, how do they manage to keep paying the.40 every quarter. Earnings are just not adequate to continue paying the .40. So, just be aware of what you'd be getting in to. Check my Earnings Report post in early August. It is short.
  • stairm01: @jan2138 $VGR Yes Dana, I read your post from the earnings report. I'm aware. This move since the 9th of August has gotten me 9.45 % so far and I have a stop set close. I appreciate all of your input and have done very well with the yield hogs, entering on pullbacks, stock offerings, and just good moves into the ex-dividend dates.
  • jan2138: @stairm01 $VGR Sorry. I was not aware that you are trading it short term. Glad to see you are profiting. I just did not want you to be going in just for the yield. Good luck with it.
  • Danzguy: @jan2138 $VGR It was very thoughtful of you to share your thoughts on this ticker. Please don't stop helping your fans here, in the forum! Cheers!
  • stairm01: $VGR Working. Dividend = 12.60% I went long Aug 9 after earnings and the move above and pull back to the 200 dma. This move above the 200 was the first since March of 2018. I've added once and will add on pullbacks.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR This high yielding dividend cash machine has been paying .40 quarterly and an annual 5% stock dividend like clockwork for years. The mystery has been how they do it based on the earnings no matter how one looks at them. In all the yea ...
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR On another smoky note, they will report PM on 8/7/19.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR FYI: New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation boosting the minimum sales age for tobacco and electronic cigarette products to 21 from 18.
  • PJMR11: $VGR. continuing moving up
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR is in the 2nd day of a 2 day rally with buyers motivated by the declaration of their usual .40 dividend and a cash yield of 16.21%. The 5% stock dividend will add to this if it is declared again in 9/2019. Ex-date is 6/17/19 so, it will be interesting to see how it behaves between now and then.
  • PJMR11: $VGR Nice day.
  • RedLeaf1: $VGR @jan2138 @grcjr Thank you for your thoughts yesterday on staying clear of this ticker here. I agree. There are better ways to make money.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR: A little something to cheer about. There is little else. $VGR announced that it has declared a regular quarterly cash dividend on its common stock of $0.40 per share. The quarterly cash dividend will be payable on June 27, 2019 to holders of record as of June 18, 2019, ex-date 6/17/19.
  • RedLeaf1: @jan2138 $VGR Would you consider holding long enough to qualify for the dividend (and then sell) or any other strategy here? [I sold my entire position shortly after you sold yours, which was well-timed.]
  • jan2138: @RedLeaf1 $VGR The best strategy is to steer clear of it. The mystery continues to be how they can continue to pay the .40 cash dividend. For years, I held on as the share price behaved adequately. The cash dividend and the 5% annual stock dividend made it worth the risk. But, there came a point where it was beginning to look grim with the tobacco industry under a great deal of pressure and VGR's earnings were just not there. So, I bailed. It was a good ride while it lasted. I really don't know how to answer your question feeling the way I do about the issue. If I were still long, it would be because I had faith in their intent to keep paying the .40. So, I'd probably just hang in there and take the dividend and ride with it.
  • grcjr: @jan2138 $VGR - Hmmmm. A stock with a price of $9.00 paying out $1.60 per year .... 17.8% yield. Chart has been trending down for about a year and a half with a recent steeper fall which then recovered to the downtrend resistance line. It has dropped in price from $22 to the current $9 in about a year and a half. You'd need to go back 10 years to find a lower price than current. I dumped this ticker some time ago. To me, it looks like it is not done going down. The 200dma is above the 150 which is above the 50dma which is above the 20dma. I could be wrong but I don't see a reason to buy it now. I'd like to see it move above the 50dma at a minimum to think about a buy. .... so, it should bounce now.
  • jan2138: @RedLeaf1 $VGR Looks like there are a lot of players buying in for the dividend. Volume is heavy in the stock.
  • jan2138: @grcjr $VGR Don't forget the 5% stock dividend they have been issuing for years. You are right not to buy it now. The tobacco sector is suffering and will continue to do so.
  • grcjr: @jan2138 $VGR - and how much will the stock drop leading into, on, and after x-day?
  • jan2138: @grcjr $VGR It will adjust by about .40 at the open on the ex-date, i.e the price at the close on the day prior less .40. No telling what happens after the open and from then on. I wish my crystal ball could tell me about the other times you mention.
  • travelingman: @jan2138 $NEWT $VGR Thank you
  • jan2138: @travelingman $NEWT It varies depending on my evaluation of the risk. My faves would generally be 5-10% of the total, max, as I build a position. That said, this is rare. Most of my current positions are less than that as I am well diversified. As an issue appreciates, it could become more. At one time, my position in $VGR became 20% at its peak. I am out of it now.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR reported this morning and as usual, there were many numbers discussed which look to me like this is definitely not a growing business nor has it been for years. The continuing mystery is how they manage to continue paying the .40 cash ...

  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR reported this morning and while the top and bottom lines appear to have improved, I continue to be baffled as to how they pay the .40 dividend. I am not alone in this. I am waiting for a transcript of the CC before I comment further.

  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR continues to move on up. Since the higher low on 1/24/19, it has rallied 26%. Since the 52 week low on 12/21/18, it has gained 33%. Late 2018 was a test of one's tolerance for risk as it experienced the slide to 12/24/18 with so many others. A couple of weeks after their last ER, I decided to sell my position which was a good move considering what happened. I was optimistic after the report but changed my mind after seeing some information about the 10.5% notes they issued in 10/18 which referred to the indenture and some limitations on payments of dividends if certain financial metrics were not met. I have no reason to believe that this will happen, but I am not inclined to reenter it at this time. I had a great run over many years and will be satisfied with that for now.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR Don't look now, but it continues to"sneak up".
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR is moving again. It is in the process of moving to a higher high after establishing a recent higher low. I am out of this one and don't think I will get back in no matter what it does from here. There is too much pressure on the industry which could have a serious negative effect and cause it to tumble again.
  • RedLeaf1: @jan2138 $VGR Thanks for your thoughts on $VGR. I have to agree with you.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR is making another move up after crashing to a 52 week low on 12/21/18, reversing and making an effort to recover through 1/8/19 before entering a period of consolidation, then backing off a bit and establishing a higher low on the 24th and moving up in an attempt at establishing a higher high. It has a long way to go before making up the serious ground loss since last Nov.. The cash yield is 15.11% and if you add in the potential 5% stock dividend, it is over 20%. I am still not ready to get back in.
  • jthomas575: Any insights on $VGR? At bottom of BB range.
  • sierramp: @jthomas575 $VGR It has been trending down for more than a year. Below the D200, below D50, @jan2138 said in Nov he expects the div to be cut. I see nothing but bad news. Many better stocks to consider.
  • jthomas575: @sierramp $VGR thanks for the comment
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR has been moving up recently. It hit a 52 week low back on 12/21/18 before reversing its path. It ended on Jan. 9th as it headed to the 14th ex-date, adjusted and is resuming its move up. Most of the activity was without excessive volume. I sold my position back in November after holding it for years. I am not inclined to get back in in spite of the very attractive yield. I am concerned about the dividend because the new bond indenture has some guidelines which could force them to change it.
  • RedLeaf1: @jan2138 $VGR Thanks for the follow up, even though you're not in this ticker any more.
  • jan2138: @RedLeaf1 $VGR Oh, I am watching it because I want to see if there is a point where I should reenter.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR: FYI "Vector Group Ltd. (NYSE:VGR) and Douglas Elliman Realty, LLC today announced that Vector Group's indirect wholly-owned subsidiary has acquired the remaining 29% interest it did not own of Douglas Elliman Realty, LLC from Douglas Elliman Chief Executive Officer Dorothy "Dottie" Herman. Ms. Herman will continue in her role as Chief Executive Officer of Douglas Elliman." I do not think this will make much, if any, difference to the bottom line for $VGR.
  • DrScience: @jan2138 $MRCC falling out a volatility squeeze for the second time in as many months -- last time on earnings release, this time on the divvy. I'm having restless sleep just thinking of $MRCC being about a step behind in $VGR-like price action. BTW $VGR goes ex-div on Monday.
  • KemoSabe: @DrScience $MRCC $VGR I think jan2138 sold all his $VGR back on 11/21. If you are still holding it, you need to go back and read his post for his reasons for selling.
  • jan2138: @DrScience $MRCC $VGR I posted back in November that I had sold my $VGR after many years. I sold @ 13.72 saving some $. $MRCC is different in that I can see they will be able to keep covering the dividend. I had become doubtful about $VGR which I posted a month ago.

  • grcjr: @jan2138 $VGR - (Late to post this but) thanks for all your posts and this one in particular. I had been wrestling with this one for months. Today it is setting yet another low, going back to late 2013/early 2014. Need to make sure that my wife's auto-reinvest goes away.
  • jan2138: @yieldhogs $VGR declares a regular .40 dividend, ex-date 12/17/18, pay date 12/28/18. As I posted, I sold my position because I expected them to be forced to cut the dividend because of terms in the 10.5% bond indenture. I guess it is not a factor, yet. Even so, with today's move, I am still ahead having sold it at almost $1.00 above where it is now.
  • jan2138: @grcjr $VGR I think that is a wise move.
  • jan2138: @ yieldhogs $VGR After being long this one for many years enjoying the .40 and 5% stock dividends, I have decided to exit the position which was pretty large for me, i.e. over-sized. I do a fair amount of reading which includes some articles on SA. ...
