  • sbw1: @scottrades Yesterday I bought some $SPXU. From the pattern it has been in this year it looks as though it can continue higher. Besides raising my stop should I buy more tomorrow morning depending on the market or wait?
  • rickconiglio64: @sbw1 $SPXU I Did the same, now looking to see a good spot to sell. Does it fill the gap ?.... pls share thoughts
  • scottrades: @sbw1 $SPXU I'd wait to buy more in case we get a snap back in the market. I'd look for SPY to try and stabilize around the 50 Day and then if we get a breakdown, add and stagger again.
  • Docoof: @rickconiglio64 $SPXU Are you Forexpro? If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it. It was a glitch in the system that turned up yesterday.
  • rickconiglio64: @Docoof $SPXU ,No... just a subscriber thats been trying to learn from a great group of traders.... thankful
  • Docoof: @rickconiglio64 $SPXU Got it. Thanks for the response. The entirety of my trading experience is constituted by being a member here at SMM. And you are 100% right: there are a great group of traders here and I am thankful too.
  • Hawaiianmaxx: @Docoof $SPXU👍 Liked
  • mharps: @scottrades Happy to see it but I don't trust it- took a tiny bit of $UUP, $SPXU and $QID
  • bla00109: $SPXU I'm traveling this afternoon, and can't babysit this daytrade. Sold 1/2 for 5.39% profit -- decent daytrade, but I'm going to take my chances and swing the other half over the weekend. This lowers my cost basis in other half to 19.1, which I think gives me a comfortable cushion.
  • jeff_free69: @vcondry $TWTR yup already been there: $SQQQ $SPXU
  • issues: Is anyone holding bear etfs? $SQQQ looks like an interesting chart. The others include: $TZA (sm cap), $FAZ (finance) $ERY (energy) $SPXU, $SRTY, $SPXS $SOXS, $SDOW, $SDS, x2 The best time would be during the mid to end of August to be entering these, right?
  • champ: @issues $SQQQ $TZA $FAZ $ERY $SPXU $SRTY $SPXS $SOXS $SDOW $SDS......Click $SQQQ to see, I was Day-Trading it today, along with $SDS $UVXY and I also had a short $XOP.....
  • Cjauger: Short $SPXU bouncing on the 50 day
  • slp20: @lrbarton $spy $SDS is a 2x, $SH a 1x, $SPXS is a 3x, $SPXU is also a 3x bear for the SPY all are inverse etfs. I’ve seen the 1x and 2x used the most as they have more volume and less volatile.
  • HillB: Might have a relief rally starting tomorrow. I plan to sell into strength and increase my $SQQQ and $SPXU exposure to get closer to fully hedged on the long positions that I want to keep where charts aren’t fully broken yet and I have some cush ...
  • HillB: @charles23phelps I’ve been managing this chop by using $SQQQ and $SPXU to hedge. I’m about 90% invested right now on long side and 50% hedged. Allows me to stay in my core long positions and stomach giving them more on the downside as long as the overall trend is intact. I didn’t see as much draw down yesterday and not as much green today, but I find this strategy to be easier to deal with emotionally for myself in choppy waters than getting in and out frequently. Taking off the hedge is a little more art than science, but I plan to scale out of it once we break the downwards sloping trend line
  • HillB: @sweeper240 #anyone I saw as well and have also seen some other commentary around next week being a seasonally weak week overall. I don’t like to forecast because that has burned me, but my plan is to take some profits this week, limit going big on new entries, and put on some hedge $SQQQ or $SPXU if the market weakens significantly. We have marched a long way pretty fast and bumping up against all time highs so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a rest. A lot of charts look similar and hoping that the cup pattern turns into a nice handle, which will hopefully spring us forward.
  • HillB: I wanted to share a few thoughts about strategy. I think Dan and Scott do an excellent job here and have really helped me on entries, emotions, and trading psychology. What I have found that works for me is different than others. I use about 75% of ...
  • JJS: @HillB $SQQQ $SPXU , One more hedge you might consider is $PSQ, but your choice, which works best.
  • Bridget: @HillB $SQQQ $SPXU I really like your take on keeping your long term core positions and buying hedges during pullbacks. This keeps you in good stocks for longer.
  • AndStars: @DrScience $SPY $SPX #WalkawayTrade Great to hear from you, Dr! If one were to not use options, would any of these inverse EFTs do the trick for a walkaway end-of-quarter trade? $SPXS $SPXU $SQQQ $TQQQ All are 3x inverse ETFs that trade at relatively high daily volumes. I don't know of any whole-market inverse ETFs. That would probably fit the bill, too. If anyone knows of a whole market 2x or 3x ETF please share.
  • williamJ: $WYNN $PENN $DKNG $NCLH $SPXU These shorts continue to work really well. $DKNG target of 32 is getting close but this has become such an outsized position from avg 41 that I'm taking half off today to lock in profit. Same for $WYNN - taking 3/4 off of what was a full position but has now become outsized from avg 100 bucks. $PENN remains a full short position with avg 37 and target still around 28. Aside from these focus names, remain short the overall market via a basket of other generic names, including $SPXU. Sitting on ~25% cash.
  • williamJ: $WYNN $DKNG $PENN $NCLH $SPXU #Market

I did quite a bit of profit taking and right sizing today and yesterday after monster downside moves in these mo-mo names I have had full or near full short positions in the last couple weeks after waning #reop ...
  • williamJ: Every bounce is getting sold into in this market. Added $SPXU at 12.50 for a day trade around core $SPY short. Will add again on break of HOD. Stop set on violation of VWAP
  • williamJ: $SPY the beating continues AHs and that looks like a big red candle on my screen sitting right on the 20 simple and 50 exponential moving averages on the daily. Some of the largest sell volume we've had going into the close since mid-April. Net short via $SPXU since 2740 and added 25% on the softness today ... but can't say I would be surprised to wake up to 3000 tomorrow. Good luck everyone
  • Brian_M: Like the look of both the $SPXL and $SPXU Lools like they are about to resolve the triangle pattern soon. Will be jumping on the winner for a $3 move in the $SPY either way.
  • Brian_M: @Brian_M $SPXL $SPXU $SPY The winner appears to be $SPXL Taking for a spin target around $289 or so SPY. Stop at $34.02
  • williamJ: $SPY Still quite short this #market but some individual names are starting to present some long entries and I'm taking partial profits on some of these specific shorts $APA $APY $SEAS $CDNS $BRKL. Also closing out AMZN puts. Maintaining $SPXU and $TZA position likely into next week. I expect we make a run at 2750. From a daily perspective, RSI, TSV, Stochastics, MACD all just starting to roll over as we move towards testing the 50 EMA and 20 SMA.
  • Drkay: $SPXL and $SPXU I've been watching these two for some time, no trades yet. I would like an opinion for the following scenario. Let's say I purchase 100 shares of each at 10 AM on the day I decide to trade. If the market goes up I am covered, if the market goes down I am covered. I would sell either on downside at break even or slightly less and let the other run for a profit. Opinions?
  • phgruver: @Drkay $SPXL $SPXU You are, basically, talking about implementing a Strangle/Straddle options strategy, as both the ETF's you mention use options to create the leverage to generate 3x and -3x the return of the S&P500. Be sure you understand what ...
  • Sandra: @phgruver $SPXL $SPXU I didn’t see any mention of options in the question?
  • Drkay: @phgruver $SPXL $SPXU Thank you.
  • william.j: Thanks @DAN! Following up on $UGAZ trade and #market. I continue to be mostly cash/short via $SPXU as of yesterday with just a few day trades on today for short money - and they have been losers ($LAKE-stopped out, $FRO-down 2%). $UGAZ is pushing right up on 37 and I'll be a small buyer on a 'breakout' of that level. Breakout in quotes as most of these are failing and have been with few exceptions the last few days. Big picture indicators rolling over in the case of #MACD on $SPY hourly and daily timeframes or diverging in the case of #McClellanOscillator.
  • william.j: $SPXU took a long position after break through vwap. Trading 5 min chart
  • william.j: $SPXU Looking to add to short position if we move above 18.40
  • Bert953: @AlexH $SPXL Agree, moved my stop up. Aha - I'm out. Wondering if i should rotate into $SPXU?
  • alfred1939: @Dan Hi Dan , Would you consider going long $SPXU ?
  • DAN: @alfred1939 $SPXU Not a chance.
  • DAN: @DAN $SPXU Well, maybe now. ;-)
  • issues: @bRobert $SPY We bought the triple neg SPX= $SPXU, with TS at 3%. Same action, different path!

  • mopick: @champ $SPY $DJI, considering a short here for the final hour, $SPXU, as the market usually sells off last hour on a Friday.
  • champ: @mopick $SPY $DJI $SPXU ---- With China, is playing games again and IRAN, is raising hell, I'm watching $UVXY, for another trade and sure $SPXU, could work, if one works, the others will also.
  • champ: $UVXY & $SPXU....could work, we will see.
  • mopick: $SPXU, initiated this short. Think the market is overdue for a pullback here now that earnings are pretty much completed. More intense focus will now concentrate on macro developments. Am leery as to the next step from China.
  • bRobert: @mopick $SPXU Little squeeze/breakout/retest Bounce Small reversal pattern $37+ with move > $32.50 np
  • champ: $UVXY + $2.00 $SPXU $0.80 $SQQQ $0.33 ....had some great moves this morning...but now zig-zagging....I have been trading these ETF's. Still holding....and I will move back in with size, if I get the opportunity.
  • CraigReynolds:
  • Nepenthe: @bigbartabs So in other words, we should pile into the $SPXU and $SQQQ?
  • petros06: @srohits03 $SDS $SQQQ $DXD, $SPSX, $SPXU,$SOSX, $DOG
  • millcreek: $SPXU Why is this up over 300%?
  • Henry: @millcreek $SPXU 3:1 split,
  • bsnceo: @Henry $SPXU - do you see any advantage over $SPXS?
  • Vehid: @champ @Junior1 well depends on which side you are. I closed 3/4 of $SPXU position for good profit but holding $DRIP under water . It pays well to short fake rallies as market is weak and seems it will stay that way till further notice.
  • champ: @Vehid $SPXU $DRIP ---- It is all about timing the news....really do need to get the news, the facts....the decision on what they are going to do. Then market directions becomes a little easier...clearer, for ETF's because it could go either way, just a lot of chop today....however, going into the close, that was selling, going into the Tariff news, in the last 10 minutes....know doubt about that. It really doesn't matter to me, long or short, I will follow the $$$$. LOL
  • Vehid: I added to $SPXU position early today and on any pull back. Looks like both $SPXU and $DRIP working so far
  • Vehid: Sold almost all of my $JDST for profit and cannabises for a loss. Holding a small position in $SPXU and $DRIP for now and sitting on cash. Bonds got no buyers today. Monitoring $TLT / $TMF to see if buyers appear when the 10yr yield reaches 3%
  • Vehid: @woodman since so many have the same feeling, I am waiting for a rally to load $SPXU. Nobody is willing to hold into weekend
  • woodman: @Vehid $SPXU - if the sky doesn't fall in over the weekend, Monday might well be a good day. I just feel that there is some inevitability to certain events brewing in D.C.. It's the timing I can't know. So, I figure short duration trades, taking profits when available, and less exposure over weekends is the way to go for now. Friday evenings have tended to be big news events.
  • Vehid: @woodman $SPXU For sure. Long or short, I just day trade for now. Till I see $SPY close above 272 three days!
  • Vehid:
  • Vehid: @DrScience #MOC Today was the best day to be in $SPXU. Bought every pull back and paying off now!
  • Vehid: I closed most of my positions yesterday. I see a wedge in S&P and going to wait for now. Also watching $SPXL $SPXU $TNA for day trades.
  • Vehid: Started position in $SPXL after closing position in $SPXU for a small loss. Average 41.55. Stop (avg) 41.58
  • champ: @Vehid $SPXL $SPXU ---- Very nice.... up 5%...good work....just need to watch the news because very strong news is moving the markets....into earnings. This is really only #DAY-1...for now....this strong move could have legs....but we really just need this move to slow down....slow is better.
  • Vehid: @champ $SPXL $SPXU #DAY-1 Thanks.,it is just a day trade. I am going to close it completely by the end of the day no matter what. Looks like getting stopped out now!
  • champ: @Vehid $SPXL $SPXU #DAY-1 ---- Yes, tomorrows is another day....it is really hard to swing ETF's with Syria ....hanging around....but many certain stocks are working. The market are strong and working for many positive reasons....only one negative reason is still out there, for the short term.....but General Mad Dog, is in charge, so that is positive, he won't do anything stupid.
  • Vehid: @champ $SPXL $SPXU #DAY-1 Let's cross fingers! For the last two month, any rally turned out to be a good shorting opportunity. But as you said, tomorrow is a new day. This can be different
  • Vehid: Add $TSLA to your chart if you are trading $SPY $SPXL $SPXU
  • Vehid: ...
Also I entered into some long call positions which were good till Thursday. Today, thanks to the president, market started with water level above my head. As I know that nothing positive to be expected just from pure luck, I started position in $SPX ...
  • Vehid: bought some $SPXU earlier just to hedge but still under water; could be worse
  • Vehid: @bnnybklyn $SQQQ I entered into $SPXU earlier with cost base 11.33 and sold too early around 11.56. See newbie fear
  • steve71: @Vehid $SQQQ $SPXU Right. On weak Fridays, selling often crescendos into the close. Especially true before a 3 day weekend. It often works to sell shorts and buy a couple of longs around 4:28 EST on a bad day. The general theme of SMM is to chase strength. But buying when the merch is on sale is another workable approach.
  • Vehid: @steve71 $SQQQ $SPXU Thanks! Cannot blame myself for taking profit early as being greedy has been my first enemy!
  • Vehid: @steve71 $SQQQ $SPXU I did not dump all at once. 1/3 each time
  • steve71: @Vehid $SQQQ $SPXU Could follow Dan's suggestion and scale out of a position instead of dumping all at once. BTW, a great Buy signal is when numerous posters aver that they are "All in cash."
  • Vehid: Could be because of me. I bought some $SPXU and second later it dropped like a history. Sold it right away. So, should be back soon!
  • Vehid: I had 40 calls on $SPXU $10 expiry on March 17. Friday I let them expire as I was not making much. Today I noticed that my broker actually executed them and I have 4000 $SPXU! Now I am just selling them every pop. First time being lucky this way
  • bsnceo: @Vehid $SPXU I believe that in the absence of customer orders, some b/d's will go ahead and execute call options that are in the money at expiration by some stated amount.
  • phgruver: @bsnceo @Vehid $SPXU At TDA, the amount is $0.01. In the money options require action on your part.
  • Vehid: @phgruver $SPXU Thank you guys, didn't know this. Could end up bad but do not underestimate newbie's luck!
  • DrScience: @Vehid $SPXU Just to reiterate what has already been said... Call buyers must manage their trades at expiration, as according to SEC, FINRA, OCC, CBOE, and any other acronym-based regulator/organization/Wall Street Entity, all options ITM by .01 are automatically exercised.
  • Vehid: @DrScience $SPXU Thank you Dr for the explanation. appreciate it
  • CHOFF: @Robert1965 $SPY $QQQ $DIA - $SPXU has buyers;)
  • Vehid: @Forexpro #E-MiniFutures Thanks. Picked up more speculative calls on $SPXU $10 expiring this Friday
  • Vehid: $SPY at LOD. My $SPXU calls working really good
  • Vehid: BTO $SPXU Call $10 3/16
  • Vehid: My calls on $SPXL are up again, will sell to the strength. Entered call buy orders on $SPXU MR 16 @11 as they are very cheap and would come handy if market becomes rainy next week, if not, my $SPXL calls makes much more money. $JNUG built a very solid base at $13 as it held for 12 days. I am going to hold though weekend as gold is forming a reverse h/s in daily.
  • Nepenthe: @bigbartabs $TQQQ $SSO $SPXL $SBXU My error. So sorry. $SPXU. I've never played these. But I see you on them, and I think, well, with the correct guidance. Or something like that.
  • bigbartabs: @Nepenthe $TQQQ $SSO $SPXL $SBXU $SPXU ... SPXU, shorting stocks... you could be right. However I don't short stocks. I only go long (when the time is right), and 95% of the time using ETFS in indexes and sectors (both x1 and x3 derivatives).
    I've ...
  • Vehid: Started small position in $SPXU entry at $10.50 stop at $10.38
  • bnnybklyn: $SPXU - what I've been looking at for now
  • Vehid: @bnnybklyn $SPXU I have March 16 calls at $11 that would like to sell but bid/ask gap is 50%!
  • champ: @jwstich $SPXU --- Yes, its hard to know what stocks to target because of volatility but because of volatility, there are many trading opportunities. For traders only...who know how to find low risk entries, nightly after these type of drops. Day trades, off of market and stock turns....high and low stock turns...its all about #Market and #Stock timing. Do a few paper trades, so you can have a better understanding on how they work....but its really for qualified traders/investors #Only, in this type of market.
  • jwstich: @champ $SPXU #Market #Stock #Only Thanks @Champ. I admire how you and a few others are able to do this. I would like to, but have not been able to get the timing right even though I might have the right general direction the market/stock is going. I know you do your homework and work hard at this. I will follow your advice and also try and do some more reading. Thanks for the suggestions.
  • captron: $SPXU - Following Dan's idea and bought some. Don't like the way this market is acting. A little insurance never hurts.
  • etmagic: Dan do you recomend holding $SPXU over night? stop may be hit?
  • DAN: @etmagic $SPXU I don't recommend that.
  • DAN: $SPXU -- I just bought the Ultra short SPY etf for a trade. Seems like we're heading lower.
