  • woodman: $BPT - I bought this on Wednesday. Keep an eye on it. Last time it dropped below the 20 day area (back in March), it fell a little more to the 50d where it found support and moved back up nicely. It's an orderly mover, but the moves are big percentage-wise so protect yourself with position size if you decide to take a shot. Happy hunting.
  • woodman: $BPT - a volatile one within the #Refiners but interesting here on the 50d.
  • champ: @woodman $BPT #Refiners ...I have been posting on both of these also.. $PBF is a triple and $DK is almost a double, since last July.
  • champ: $BPT...YTD this stock is up 309% and every week this just keeps climbing...NP.
  • woodman: $BPT has been on a tear.
  • woodman: #Refiners - Here are some grabbing my attention: $PBF $VLO $HFC $DK $CLNE $CVRR $BPT $INT $PSX. And these are nice but would have to chase: $MPC $ANDV. I like $CVI too but it's topping today.
  • stairm01: $CVI AND $BPT High yielders continue to hold above the 50dma. $BPT is in a good position to start it's pre-dividend run. Note a one year chart and the run up prior to the dividend. Exit on a peak 3-5 days prior to dividend. Long both.
  • stairm01: $BPT Just bought back into stock in this high yielder at the 20 dma. I've had good trades of buying this a month or so ahead of the Ex-Div. date and riding it up into the div. It seems to pull back sharp a few days before the Ex-Div. date, so you must watch or set stops about a week ahead of that. Dividend is $1.27. It has been doing this before the dividend for the last 2 years. I've post on this in the past.
  • stairm01: $BPT and $CVI Holding $BPT and took profits on some last Friday at $28. These two just keep going higher and they pay a great dividend.
  • stairm01: $BPT This has been a screamer. Bought a starter before the $1.27 dividend on March 13, and then added after the div. For the past year this stock has really moved nicely into the dividend and drops a few days before the dividend. Then provides another good entry within a month after the ex-div date.
  • stairm01: @grcjr $NEWT $BPT and $LADR are two other high yielders that have also moved very high. I took some off the table of $BPT this morning at $28. Have to book some profits, and kept that nice $1.27 dividend.
  • jan2138: @stairm01 $BPT Please check my post on this ticker made 3/7/18.
  • stairm01: @jan2138 $ETJ $ETY $ETW $EXG Hi Dana, have you ever looked at $BPT? Pays approximately a $1 dividend quarterly, but what is interesting to me is that shortly (2-4 weeks) after it pays the dividend, it starts a nice run up into the next dividend. Up 2.3% today running into the Ex-div date in a few days.
  • thehook1: $BPT Jan2138 any thoughts....I like the yeild. In close to $20
  • jan2138: @thehook1 $BPT This is a U.S. Royalty Trust and, as such, is a special situation. You have to know when the trust expires so that you don't buy in to it and then find 6 months later that the dividends have been terminated. Also, the dividends depend ...
  • jan2138: @khamilton $BPT: here are 2 posts I made many years ago which may be of help. You will need to do some digging to determine what the expected life is, and what the dividend record has been in the last few years. I don’t like U.S. Royalty Trusts ...
  • khamilton: Looking at opening a position in $BPT. Would appreciate your opinion on this trust. Is it a yield hog you can trust? Thank you.@jan2138 $TPVG
  • fitzfour113: @Dan - Thoughts on $BPT? 6 Month consolidation, then pop from squeeze late Sept; bouncing between 20 dma and upper BB. 9.5% yield; 50dma just crossed 200 dma
  • bullmoose: @jan2138 Dana, I'm raising that VGR partial stop once again. Always nice to be able to raise it every day as it keeps making higher lows. Sooner or later, and probably sooner rather than later as the rally is getting long in the tooth, I will be taken out of a portion of my shares. But I'll have plenty left to enjoy the dividend and will look to add on the next drop and bounce. With my high yielders, I always try to take off a little after a nice run, then add back more than I sold when it pulls back and bounces so that my position continues to grow. It's worked very well for me on stocks such as $BPT, $VOC, $WMC, $WHZ, $FTR and $WIN.
  • woodman: $BPT - pullback to the 200 day and nice bounce on Friday on greater than average volume. Sports a 14% dividend yield which beats a sharp stick in the eye. Just a suggestion; nothing more. Like everything else, be aware of where resistance will weigh heavily. I have no position. Having been away on vacation last week, and with a lot of stops hitting, I'm not in a whole lot right now (comparatively), and I need to get my sea legs again before I start buying. I will likely take today very slowly.
  • greberalan: $BP @kking Looks like a well defined trade on BP. Also, take a look at $BPT $BP Prudhoe Bay Royality Trust. Pays an 11% #dividend -- next #dividend around April 11, 2014. Let me know what you think about $BPT also.
  • kking: $BPT @greberalan It looks like it is up against resistance at 83.86ish. Low daily average vol. so maybe there will be enough volume to push through if it becomes a #dividend capture play as it approaches ex div date.
  • bullmoose: $SDRL, $BPT # also take a look at @Dan's call on $BPT, which has a yield over 12% and a very nice looking chart.

  • jambaman: BPT...New to the forum. Hello to all. I posted in the wrong area already. Does anyone know why $BPT has gone down so much so fast on high volume. I haven't seen any news. Thanks.
  • triciab: $BPT - Don't know why it's down, but welcome aboard. Hopefully, you had a stop in place to limit your losses. You'll hear alot about the importance of stops from @Dan. Again, welcome.
  • jjpiano1: $BPT There was an article in Barrons stating the co. is way overvalued, you get royalties on oil production from wells that put out less each year.
  • kneeboy: $BPT - Just saw Laszlo Birinyi. Says $BPT is down on rumors. He's unconcerned. His cost is probably $50! I'm playing for a bounce after it cleared $108.80.
  • Poppy: $WHX -hoglet, Falling sword! 6 red candles in 7 days...broke through the 200 SMA on a heavy volume for the issue (515k). Looks to keep going. This hog was on the 'iffy' list for a while. Yield 12% but stock has fallen 19.9% from the high set on 1/13/11. Don't be the first one out of the foxhole on this one. Oil/gas may be a good sector but the oil/gas trust sector has been on the chopping block for a while now. See $MSB PBT with the exception of $BPT, which is on the way down too slowly. @poppy
  • Ondy2010: $BP Trust - Does anyone know anything about a $BP Energy Trust paying around 9%? The only Trust I could find was the $BPT (symbol) paying 7.4%. Some #CNBC analysts liked it - want to investigate further. Thanks in advance.
  • gwsmith: BPT- Yield Hoglett @Jan2138; I am interested why $BPT never made into our Yield Hog List. Do you have some reasons for not owning it that you can share? 9% annual yield is good, coupled with the growth the share prices are showing the stock has buy written all over it from a survey view. thanks, @Greg
  • DobeRescuer: $BPT - Any idea where I should place a stop under my BPT? I have a small position that I have had forever--even through the "big dump" and I don't want to lose money again, but I would like to let it go higher safely. I am having trouble determining where support would be due to the big gap up yesterday. Thanks for any help you could give me.
  • slowtime: $BPT - It's a beautiful chart. I would put the stop at yesterday's low. i.e. at $100.60 @slowtime
  • suchont: $BPT - broke above a buck. Oil trust throwing out large div. Should fit in @Dan's Q2 oil & gas theme well. It just went above a buck. May be profit taking or now it's the new support. Only got starter position last week (1/4), Should I nibble another 1/4? Help..... st.
  • indigo1948: $AGNC premarket - I have traded the pre-market in the past and it is dangerous and not for the "faint of heart". You may make a quick profit on stocks like Citi and very large issues (in terms of trading volume) that are at relatively low (under $10.00) prices but I agree with the consensus that it is not something the average investor/trader can get involved with - too much risk. It is the playground for the "big boys". Looking at $BPT - it is really moving up but seems to be extended and quite rich at these levels - anyone with thoughts. I know some commented last week when I raised the question - just wondering if there is anyone tracking this issue?
  • ogas: $BPT - not @jan2138 but I own BPT. It's been a stellar stock since I bought it last April. The weekly chart looks good to me but the daily looks extended. It is hitting a 52 week high as I type. In @Dan's words, if you just gotta - take a little and add later. On the other hand, there's no resistance ahead! Be careful.
  • ogas: $BPT - for those of you wondering why $BPT dropped so much last week, check out Mad Money's recap from last night. Basicially, #Cramer says it was one big seller and that once he was done, the stock shot right back up. Nothing wrong with this stock - especially since it has gained much of the loss back. Check out his comments.
  • 1winkie: $BPT - Article from InvestorPlace.com : "The $BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust (BPT) is a favorite among income-oriented #dividend stock investors. The stock offers a hefty yield, and since it's a # depletion trust# based on the life of its reserves, i ...
  • ogas: $BPT - Great stock in my opinion. Last week got stopped out of a partial position and bought it back plus more yesterday around $86. Nobody knows exactly why it sold off - maybe that's good since there is obviously no bad news. If you search the internet, you will find an article today that addresses the last week. It was asking the question, "time to sell or time to buy more" - they concluded to buy more but check it out for yourself. I plan on keeping $BPT as long as possible.
  • 1winkie: $BPT - . $BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust holds royalty interests in an Alaskan oil field. Performance: $BP Prudhoe Bay Royalty Trust returned 107% in the past year, outpacing benchmarks. Despite a minimal Wall Street following, the trust has proven to be a lucrative #dividend vehicle. It returned 21% annually, on average, during the past five years. Its #dividend payments fluctuate in size. If the trust is able to maintain its latest $3.61 quarterly payout, it yields 15.4%. Thoughts on starting a position right here?
  • dlylis: $BPT Why did it dump so badly? I have not had time to look it up. Also research CanRoys in 2011 if you are not familiar. I am not 100% that $BPT is a Can Roy but I think so.
  • 1winkie: $BPT - Why did $BPT go down 11% on Friday? I can't find an explanation anywhere.
  • ogas: $BPT - I have owned this stock for almost a year and love it. I set a stop last week on a partial position and sold 1/5. When I saw the green candle this morning, I bought back my 1/5 and added even more. I can't find any reason for the huge drop last week except maybe investors were scared. I'm writing this just before the market closes but I got in at $86.
  • ogas: $BPT - I was out all day and came home to see $BPT took a nosedive. I can't find any news - anyone have a clue as to why it dropped so much?
  • guyton3: $BPT - yield hog candidate? Hard to buy based on its recent action, and I've heard @Dan say we really want to buy near support on those we buy for the yield. But at 15%, the "gotta have its" in me are begging me to take a small position. Anyone know anything on the fundamentals of this royalty trust?
  • stigs: BPT- guton3 One of the problems with $BPT is that the qtrly. #dividend is never the same - your calculation is just on last payment which was more than double the previous three payments.
  • guyton3: $BPT - Thanks, @stigs! That makes a big difference!
  • ogas: $BPT - I haven't heard much mention of this lately but it's sitting at a 52 week high. Weekly and Daily charts look good and it's still boasting a 16% return. I bought it as a #yieldhog but am wondering whether I should take some profits or just keep a good stop in place. Anyone have an opinion?
  • Poppy: $BPT @ogas: If the stock keeps going up into the blue younder you should definitely keep a trailing stop so when it comes back down for a rest you don't kick yourself for not taking some profit or having some protection. Imagine if it falls n% - how much of a fall would break your heart, then put a stop there! Sell some to reap the profit then buy it back if you think it will go up again. Remember @DAN's zigs and zags - if the zags don't bother you then you have an iron stomach. FWIW - that's my $.02...good luck with it. $BPT is one I am looking to get in at a good price. Hope this help your decision making. Cheers, @Poppy
  • ogas: $BPT - @JMN I've been in $BPT since last April and have loved the ride. I'm currently up 45%. I don't have any plans to sell it because I bought it for the #dividend and the charts haven't given me any reason to sell. The weekly chart shows a slow/steady uptrend. The daily chart, on the other hand, shows that it's awfully close to a possible breakout. I think that @Dan would say to wait for the breakout or buy lower - closer to the 50 day moving average. He'd also say that if you just can't help it - buy small. I hope I did @Dan justice...ha ha

Thanks @Dan for videos/posts. It helps put things in perspective. Still trading with caution, good entries, stops, etc. Trailing stops with stocks that are moving out such as $BPT and $HP help in taking some profits. I do like your analogy about an "employee that is working for you" to not get out so quick on a stock that is advancing . I've been using a trailing stop on half my position after some profit and using original stop below resistance for other half.
