Henry: ...
I have a couple stocks that I have held for 20+ years that have monster long term gains. If I kick the bucket they get an updated cost basis, but if I live another 10 years there is one I need to sell some for rebalancing and the the other $CNI I'm ... - Henry: $UNP you don't often see the rails up 5%. For Dow Theory believers this is a good thing long $CNI $WAB
- Bert953: @Henry $CNI another squeeze, but this one has the daily 200 > 50 > 8dMA's. Also, lower low on weekly chart. Monthly holding long term (2016) trend line support. I had gotten away from looking at multiple time frames, but I'm getting back to it as a great overview.
- Henry: $CNI $CP The lockout is over. @Scottrades where do us gringos go to look for Canadian news?
- Henry: $CP $CNI Rail workers have been locked out after failed negotiations. We get lumber, auto engines, fertilizer and even chlorine for water treatment from Canada. This could be a big deal if it lasts.
- Henry: $UNP All Aboard! actually no position for me, I'm big into $CNI and $WAB
- Henry: $WAB I don't look at this choo choo builder everyday but it has broken it's down trend. Green shoots in the trannys $JBHT coming out of a squeeze $UNP finally some green days long WAB $CNI
- Henry: $UNP $CSX $CP $CNI 4 out of the 5 major carriers making new highs #Dow-theory
- Henry: #RAILS $UNP $CNI $CP all made new highs this am, $CSX and $NSC close behind.
- Eng_trader: $CNI still looking good
- Henry: $UNP Finally breaking out, catch up with $CSX $CNI and $CP
- Eng_trader: $CNI looking good
- Henry: $CSX $CNI both in squeezes, both reporting this afternoon. $CNI is out, increased expenses. looking for 10% earnings growth.
- Henry: $CNI stock buy back and increase in dividend of 7% payable in that @Scottrades funny money
- Henry: @marketdude $UNP true but there is a reason Uncle Warren bought Burlington Northern. Yes they are cyclical but UNP was a $15 stock 20 years ago. I'd like to sway out of my $CNI because of the foreign tax but my cost basis there is $9, same time frame as UNP;s move.
- Henry: $WAB $CNI All the rails are up today. I'm am long these
- Henry: $WAB in a flag. Karen Firestone mentioned this one on Halftime. The company makes parts components for transit and freight as well as locomotives. The charts of the other rails look good. Everyone believes Congress will prevent the rail strike. No one is mentioning how the 24% wage increase will impact profits. long $WAB and $CNI for years.
- Henry: @mkarter $ZIM It's now a moot point, but there was no reason to expect it would not trade down the full $17 the day it went ex-divy, so yes it would have made sense to sell it before. My accountant does my taxes and I get a tax credit for taxes paid to Canada for a large position in $CNI, in a TAXABLE account According to Schwab there is no recourse in getting a refund on foreign taxes in a retirement account. Their theory that you are ultimately saving US taxes on a regular IRA if you previously paid foreign taxes is lame. By that logic, you could save even more money if none of your stocks paid dividends in an iRA https://www.schwab.com/resource-center/insights/content/claiming-foreign-taxes-credit-or-deduction
- Ajax4Hire: East and West coast Railroads are going off the track: $DJUSRR, $IYT, $UNP, $CSX, $NSC Mid-USA $KSU and Canada $CNI, $CP seem to be ok.
- Pokersmith: @Ajax4Hire $DJUSRR $IYT $UNP $CSX $NSC $KSU $CNI $CP Yeah, quite a bit of downside pressure. The volume is bigly, which is concerning
- Ajax4Hire: @Ajax4Hire $DJUSRR $IYT $UNP $CSX $NSC $KSU $CNI $CP All the Truckers seem to be headed down also: $ODFK, $EXPD, $JBHT, $CHRW, $SAIA, $LSTR, $R, $SNDR, $ARCB Even $FDX, $UPS are struggling.
- metal: @Pokersmith $DJUSRR $IYT $UNP $CSX $NSC $KSU $CNI $CP $NSC was even upgraded by Wells Fargo yesterday to $337.
- Henry: #Rails $UNP Cramer shed part of his UNP before earnings, $CSX reported tonight and is up in AH, as was $CNI after earnings. $WAB is higher than it has been since 2018
- Henry: $UNP $CSX $NSC rails are still hot. long $CNI which is not so hot.
- NickSingh: @Henry $UNP $CSX $NSC $CNI remarkable sir!
- Henry: $UNP $CSX $NSC Rails that might be leaving the basement. Will they bring the truckers? We need the Trannys to start performing. long $CNI, long time.
- debeers: @Henry $UNP $CSX $NSC $CNI -you are so stubborn H! why not pick a stock that is already desrisiked by virtue of its performance---just sayin'
- Henry: @debeers $UNP $CSX $NSC $CNI Some forum member trade exclusively in the lower right corner of the chart. But like you I am mostly a longer term holder. According to Quicken my 2002 purchase of $CNI is up 1,364% with a cost basis of $8. If we show @scotttrades the chart from that time period, I'm sure he could have found 100 trades that in retrospect would have been winners. In real time it's harder to do and you pay taxes all along the way.
- Pokersmith: @Henry $UNP $CSX $NSC $CNI Always good to hear of/about trades/investments from folks who have the sand to hold on through all the noise. Kudos to you @Henry
- champ: @Henry $UNP $CSX $NSC $CNI --- I have a contractor friend, thats been holding certain railroad stocks for years...and I saw him just the other day and he is still holding them, he is only long term and thats the only tool he uses, in his market tool-box. Plus he also always builds for long-term and at 70.. he is still going strong, however now days... he very picky who he works for...and he said when it's not fun anymore, he's going to retire. ....Why even think about others, plus many investors work all kinds of different types of ways, long-term, short-term, swing-trades and even day-trades, whatever works, works.
- Ron2: @Henry $UNP $CSX $NSC $CNI Henry, I remember well when the late Rick Malone pounded the table on $CNI. He was money. Unfortunately I didn't have your patience and took my profits long ago.
- Henry: $CNI is above where it was before it announced a bid for $KSU. I have never heard an understandable explanation of the "voting trust" they wanted to use for the merger, but the Surface Transportation Board didn't think much of the idea. It has had 2 big volume days to the upside. I'm not sure why it should keep going up, I didn't think the $KSU deal was a terrible decision. @Dan talked about the effect of the sector. This sector isn't burning down the barn so I don't look for much higher. I have huge cap gains in this stock I've held since 2002. Not sure whether I will sell any or not.
- Henry: @mollagha $CSX looks like a 3 day rule effect. I did not take the trade, I thought it was a little bit late and I have a long term position in $CNI, but I think you will be OK for the short term.
- mollagha: @Henry $CSX $CNI Thanks Henry. it's just slow and the money may be better put somewhere else
- Henry: @bettyhyh32 $XONE It depends how the deal is structured. Arbitrageurs will sell Desktop Metal and buy XONE It could be that the deal is written that you get 1.89 shares of stock, period, it could be written that based on a certain date, say 9/1, you will get $17 worth of stock, based on that day's closing price, or the average price for the preceding 5-10 days. If there is a competing buyer, like in the case of $KSU, $CNI and $CP the price may rise. If that's not the case, you are better off selling before the deal closes, unless your perspective is long term.
- bettyhyh32: @Henry $XONE $KSU $CNI $CP That makes sense. Thank you for the explanation.
- Henry: $CNI I thought the merger was a done deal but $CP is still grousing about it. Scotiabank raised the pt on CNI to $127
- Henry: $CNI this has been beaten down because of the merger with $KSU. KSU rejected $CP so that fight is over, They estimate $1B in synergies and accretive to earnings in a year. Merger gives shippers a direct path from Mexico to Chicago been long for 19 years and up 1,200%
- issues: @Henry $CNI $KSU $CP Thank you Henry. I am buying $CNI tomorrow morning. We hold $KSU and $NSC. You should get a gold star for holdling CNI for 19 years. Wow. Amazing.
- bRobert: @Henry $SPY $cat $TSCO $EMR $JPM $BRK $SWK $SYK $CNI #1 The $SPY is extended A healthy pullback to the 20 Week has occurred 4 times over the past year Due to the vicious sector rotation , what has been working has been pushed to extremes Shortage of relevant stock supply to keep up with the demand . A pullback has been expected in these names but they have continued to soar . Trailing stops kept you in this nice ride Taking a little air out of the balloon is needed and will provided better entry points for those looking to buy Still a tailwind of high liquidity, low rates Friendly Feds world wide Enjoy your gains Consider partials and or / raised stops and patiently wait for better opportunities to unfold to redeploy
- champ: @Henry $SPY $cat $TSCO $EMR $JPM $BRK $SWK $SYK $CNI #1 --- Sure but everything has a Day-1, right.. and now the markets are in #Day-2... on this Reversal....for now Day-3 is unknown.
- Henry: @champ $SPY Whatever is happening, I don't like it. Nor do I think it's reversal day #1. The tech stocks and Covid stocks have been stinkin' up the room for a while. I have lots of tombstone doji's in my long term holdings $cat $TSCO $EMR $JPM $BRK/B $JPM $SWK $SYK $CNI Cathie Woods great set ups got 5% greater today. StockS that had been looking good reversed. Crypto had a big down draft late in the day. I suppose there is some alleged reason why. Percentage wise, as @dan said, it's not huge, but it doesn't feel right. The spending, the taxes, the Cramer rant that nobody wants to come to a job interview for $18/hr all bother me.
- bigbartabs: $CNI ... could be in a good spot to start a postion...
- Henry: $CNI $CP #KSU Faber tried to explain the trust part of the offer. Maybe I need another cup of coffee. Uncle Warren bought Burlington No. for 8x earnings, These guys are paying 20x for KSU
- Henry: $CNI $CP $KSU CP and CNI battling it out for the prize. CNI is recovering in price If you remember CSX's Hunter Harrison...CNI was his first gig.
- BocaRick: $CNI offer to buy $KSU $325/sh, its $CNI buying $KSU not $CP,
- Henry: $CNI breaking out of a squeeze, inside week and up. long for long time
- Henry: $CSX $NSC up on the $KSU news, $BRK/B $UNP $CNI are not
- Ajax4Hire: @jmichaelet $KSU Moved my stop to $253.91, the early intra-day lo; which was just hit. I too have a good-size position in $KSU from earlier this month. $KSU - Kansas City Southern is small compared to other railroads: $UNP,$CNI,$CSX,$NSC,$CP but $KSU goes deep into Mexico($EWW). The China/Asia manufacturing issues will spark a pivot to $EWW-Mexico. $UNP and $KSU(expecially $KSU) is well poised to support this pivot. Very bullish on $EWW-Mexico replacing the Asia manufacturing. Mexico was the original lo-cost factory location for the US in 1980-2010. - Ajax4Hire: @Yes-Man $KSU $KSU - Kansas City Southern is small compared to other railroads: $UNP,$CNI,$CSX,$NSC,$CP But $KSU goes deep into Mexico($EWW) The China/Asia manufacturing issues will spark a pivot to Mexico. $UNP and $KSU(expecially $KSU) is well poised to support this pivot. - Yes-Man: @Ajax4Hire $KSU $UNP $CNI $CSX $NSC $CP $EWW Thanks for insight on $KSU.))
- champ: @1winkie $CSX --- Many are watching $CNI, because they will be reporting in the morning, there could be some green lights flashing soon, because they are taking away their Pipelines......
- Ajax4Hire: @grcjr $CSX $UNP-Union Pacific not feeling the love from this upgrade. $NSC-Northfolk Southern holding 50day-MA $KSU-Kansas City Southern(smaller US Railroad) consolidating at 50day-MA, 20day-MA/BollingerBand center, 8day-eMA. $KSU reported earnings(beat) last Friday. $CNI-Canadian National Railways earnings in-line, beat down yesterday, rebounding today. $UNP is West-of-Mississippi River railroad; $CSX and $NSC are East-of-Mississippi River railroad(competitors) I see both $CSX and $NSC rolling thru the countryside here in GA all the time. I have read that containerized shipping is at capacity but Baltic Dry Index is down 36% from this month hi(early October). If $NSC meets earnings estimates next Wed,Oct28th(before-open) should enjoy a similar $CSX upgrade(but Options Market suggest down-big). I have a small position in $KSU now.
- JosephM: $IYT...like railroads here, $UNP, $KSU, $CSX, $NSC, $CNI.
- bRobert: @JosephM $IYT $UNP $KSU $CSX $NSC $CNI They have all enjoyed. monster moves off the lows. but have. very bullish WEEKLY bases that can support. higher prices.
- bRobert: $UNP. Tight squeeze. over 50/200d. Early W bottom bounce LOW risk entry for partial. $CP. $CNI similar Bullish rails.and trucks long term.
- Henry: $UNP $CSX $NSC $CNI $GBX $TRN $WAB I am seeing a divergence between the rail car builders and the railroads. I distrust the rally in the later. AAR used to publish weekly data, now you have to go to the individual rail sites. CSX is down 4% UNP -11% and it's way more than just coal. I've been long CNI and Wab forever.

- debeers: @bRobert $CNI $CP $KMX $LAD $LAD- Like i always say--don't get mad. Get $LAD. Stupid folk mistakenly believe their biz is selling new cars. Amazing. Nothing succeeds like predatory financing and insurance agreements. Digital delivery is nice. But its the frosting, not the cake.
- bRobert: @debeers $CNI $CP $KMX $LAD You did your homework on $LAD and have been well rewarded . More to come.

- CraigReynolds: @debeers $CP Just reviewed the RR charts and can't disagree with your favorite. $CNI also looks good in my opinion and have read positive articles lately.
- CraigReynolds: @bRobert $CP What about $CNI, have small position?
- bRobert: @CraigReynolds $CP $CNI Nothing wrong with any rail. They all have nice bases. Chart Beauty pageant
- 1993dean: Dan thoughts on $ALL $CNI $GOOG Thank you
- DAN: @1993dean $ALL $CNI $GOOG $ALL -- nice move out of a squeeze. High volume yesterday. Insurance stocks are under accumulation. $TRV is another stock to watch. $CNI -- rails have been really strong. CNI isn't at a good entry point. But if you own it...hold it! $GOOG -- working on a sloppy cup & handle. At the top of the range now, but might be moving higher and testing highs. I wouldn't buy it here because of the risk of a pullback. But if you own it, hold it. Hope that helps, 1993dean. Dan
- Henry: @indigo1948 $UNP hired Jim Vena from $CNI $CSX got a lot of price action from Hunter Harrison, $GBX reports tomorrow, not expecting good things there, that may leave a mark.
- indigo1948: @Henry $UNP $CNI $CSX $GBX - I have $UNP as a long term hold - otherwise if I were trading around it I would take the money and run this morning. Thank you for information - all the best.
- Henry: @indigo1948 $UNP $CNI $CSX If you remember, Harrison was at CNI too and CSX paid him an arm and a leg, even though health wise he had both feet on the banana peel. CSX went up way more that I expected and Hunter's death was only a slight pause. I'm told CSX employees are very unhappy, though.
- indigo1948: @Henry $UNP $CNI $CSX - I remember the Harrison story.
- Sluggo: My 12 positons now. $V $SQ $TRGP $ $TNDM $LFVN $BEAT $NEOG $LABU $$GLOB $CNI $PKI $GRMN some of these have gone beyond current buy points. Does anyone have opinions on these as far as to hold, sell or ad? I try to put these on here as soon as I buy them, but I always fall short.
- spmeyers: @Sluggo $V $SQ $TRGP $TNDM $LFVN $BEAT $NEOG $LABU $GLOB $CNI $PKI $GRMN it's asking a lot to request comments on 12 positions... that said, I'm continuing to hold TNDM with stop at 10-day m.a.; something similar with BEAT
- Sluggo: @spmeyers $V $SQ $TRGP $TNDM $LFVN $BEAT $NEOG $LABU $GLOB $CNI $PKI $GRMN Thanks! It's always a trader's dilemma to pick the top on anything! Like @dan, he tries to pick the 80% of a stock's move, missing the bottom 10% and the top 10%. As anyone, I see a big jump in a stock and want to take the profits right there, especially when you have a large gain in it. Have to overrule the human basic emotional reaction, eh?
- Henry: $CNI one of the best railroads fell out of bed yesterday. Weekly traffic reports show a big drop in farm products and grain, I guess That's all I can find. Marked divergence from US rails. I am very long term cost basis $8
- Henry: $CNI $CKU buy foreign ;-)
- Henry: $CSX $NSC $CP have pulled back for a week. $KSU $CNI looking strong. $UNP meh. Not sure I understand this divergence. I was long Jan 19 leeps, sold for a $2.21 gain on Wednesday I will look to reload at some point.
- Bridget: @Henry $CSX $NSC $CP $KSU $CNI $UNP I have also been seeing this and confused myself. Can @Dan perhaps shed any insights here?
- Henry: $CSX Looks like we had a minor sell the news event on ordinary volume. It brings us to the 8 ema. $UNP $NSC having meh days too. $CNI and $KSU are best of breed today
- Bridget: Missed the move, but here is an example of a breakout that worked $CNI
- JJT1: $CNI $PVH $ESL $ROP $WPC All P&F Triple Top B/O - that's a bullish thing! $PVH especially looks compelling as 50 day SMA crossing 200 day SMA and on Monday maybe list.
- Henry: $CNI is a few points from an all time high, the rest of the rails are doing well today $CSX $NSC $UNP $KSU $GBX
- stevef214: @Bridget $BABA $FB $AMD $DOW $SLCA $GRMN $PWN $FISV $CNI $LNT $FMSA $MMM $QVCA $FSLA $CSIQ $JASO $JKS $SND $IRTC $PTHN $PEN $CNDT What do you think of $BABA today. It's down but holding the 8EMA? Is this a god place to add?
- Bridget: $CNI breaking higher. This is in a strong long term uptrend.
-
Bridget: ...
$CNI - another new all time high, strong uptrend, high volume today
$LNT - breaking higher before earnings tomorrow after the bell
$FMSA - still in a squeeze
$MMM - looking very strong, new 52 week high
$QVCA - my dumpster diving stock today. Comin ... - rj7150: @Aragorn $CSX - CSX corps earnings are limited mainly by its rails. Does it have a trucking division like $CP or $CNI? I would look back at $CP monthly chart for when Hunter Harris went in there 3 or 4 years ago. I have no position and wish you all good luck. Hunter left his right hand man in charge at CP. CP may end up being the target??
- Aragorn: @rj7150 $CSX $CP $CNI Thank You I have some calls we will see what tomorrow brings
- JJT1: $CSX$ UNP $CNI $CSX and $UNP chugging up hill. Or go Canadien $CNI also doing well.
- beld: $cavm $cni $ms $cf $eog I am having so much fun right now being able to add to positions and they keep going up. I am not a swing trader so I have not been able to add to existing positions in more than a year, I don't think. Now, let's hope I'm not a contrary indicator. Yes, trailing stops.
- JJT1: @beld $cavm $cni $ms $cf $eog I agree. Directional trades longer than a day are working. Finally. I have $CF Jan 30 and 31 Calls. My weekly call in $EOG 106 that I sold for loss yesterday would have been profitable today. oh well. I would have been rewarded for bad trade. Learned to stay away from weeklies. Did buy $EOG Jan 105 calls and as working added Jan 110. Lately these ladder trades have worked for me.
- bbw223: @debeers $UNP $NSC $CNI $CP Just curious, any basis for not including $CSX? It too is up ~1.4%. Lowest PE of the group.
- debeers: $CNI-Here's the deal-Canada has basically 2 RR's of any size: $CP and $CNI. $CP has Ackman who has been an outstanding failure at trying to steal either Norfolk Southern or CSX for below market value while continuing to pour his own money into the stock. Then there's $CNI, remarkably well-run with no arsenic stench of Ackman and all his fetidness.
- Alexandra: @debeers $CNI $CP fetidness. hehe
- debeers: $CNI/$CVX--$CNI is a better run RR than $CP. Today, with oil up, $CNI is up 2.36%, $CVX, a great co, is up .95%. If you thin oil has bottomed, $CNI , in my opinion, is where you want to be.
- hazelb41: $IYT $ALK $CNI Dan brought our attention to the transport sector breaking out of the down-trend and setting a higher low, and he has featured a few airlines (I bought ALK), but has he mentioned the RRs? I profited on $CNI before the down-turn and it is looking good again now. It broke-out of a downtrend, set a higher low, and broke-out above and successfully tested both the 20-day MA and the 100-day MA. A small pullback to support might be a buy, wouldn't it?
- Trixie: $CNI losing the 200ma, looks to be further under the 200ma than it has been on the recent falls under the 200ma.Also looks to be falling out of the symmetrical triangle that was developing. During the weekend they had a 3rd fire within about a months time frame in northern Ontario.. The train was carrying oil cars from Alberta..From what I heard these were with the improved cars.I also believe this is on their main line in that area, and until the fire is put out it will impact their ability to move stuff across the country..
