  • champ: $IWN $TNA --- Small cap is working today, not all but the $RUT is working. Most all the large cap stocks are down today, taking down the the markets...big dow stocks like $AAPL, is weighting on the markets. It will be interesting and important to see how the markets, react going into the close. Bank stock have turned up off the lows but are still down.
  • ryanj: $IYT $MDY $IWN $SPY I am interested in the ETFs as I would like to put a majority of my trading cash to work. MY 401k accounts are also in cash. I would like to put a small percentage of 401k to work but with the markets being so crazy of late and at all time highs, it seems very risky.

  • beby138: $IWN - On 15 min chart looks like a good entry right now.
  • snmtraders: Yield Hogs @brunario - the indexes are removing the BDC's because of the way they must account for their acquired fund fees and expenses. While corporations would account for such "fees" as operating expenses, BDC's are forced to separate these out as fees, which are roughly 9% (according to Barron;s report this weekend). The index funds want to show lowest cost fees, but the ones that own BDC's are impacted by this accounting for expenses as fees, so $IWN among others are removing them from their index. This will be fine once the selling from the indexes is over, and Barron's reporter suggests it could take up to 8 weeks to divest in an orderly fashion. I am hanging onto my BDC's, and looking to add on the silly sell-off.

  • Aragorn: $TZA / $IWN - Well said @Henry. Everyone it would be healthier if you stopped trying to game a top and let the trend take you where it is going. Long $IWM Calls.
  • Henry: $IWN there are some wild spikes on the $SPY on the post market 5 min candles. There are sharks in that end of the pool.
  • Brian: @Dtoce be careful with $TZA . $IWN is holding up for now. $TZA must have done a reverse split, do you know why?
  • sterry: venting - since I just sold my $IWN at the low yesterday, I am not a happy camper to see this rally. We'll see mrkt back down again in a few days. .... uhhh... I guess?
  • sterry: $IWN - I just dump my whole position. I hate selling at the bottom. Time will tell. [edit] well... so far, it doesn't look like that went too well either. ugh.
  • sterry: $IWN (liz) - thanks, I know y're right. The engineer in me sums all my longs and divides by 3. :( I've been a very bad boy today.
  • sterry: $IWN (Liz) - en-contraire. I need the straight talk from my mentorite friends to keep me in line. Your feedback is one way I learn. Thanks! I just looked hard at the chart and decided $IWN had no where to go but down. But y're right, I could be wrong.
  • sterry: Dollar cost average - hmmmm I didn't think that was in the SMM vocabulary? But I admit I've been secretly dca'ing into $IWN the past few days.
  • sterry: $SPY, $IWN - (tips for newbies), before I buy anything in this climate, I'll be checking SPY. If $SPY is not up-trending intra-day I'm resolved to not to buy anything. Just my 01.8 cents worth.
  • sterry: SP500 - I just can't seem to get in-sync. My tickers are just jumping up and down (at random?). Very frustrated. Trimmed $BIDU, but I'll want back in at some point. $IWN seems to be lag-tracking 2xSPY up and down. ugh
  • sterry: $IWN - watching rollover from today's high. I'll be buying more on a dip. [edit] Well my theory has been totally out-to-lunch. Back to the drawing board.
  • sterry: $IWN - I'll be a chaser. Buying at the top. Bad case of the "I just can't help it's" IJCHI buy in small chunks.

I went hunting through stocks in the $IWN, because that $ETF has been on fire for some time. I found a couple of interesting trades.

Check out 800 Flowers--FLWS. It just poked through the 50ema in March, banged up against the #200ema for a go ...
  • sterry: Uptrending (Casper) - @Dan says to fire your losers. My thought is if the market turns down, the losers are just going to get worse. Personally, a month or so ago, I just ended up buying some ETFs 'cause I wanted to participate, but couldn't keep up with so many stocks. $IWN, and $XME seem to be working quite well lately. Also, I had a hard time discriminating between "trading" and "investing". I decided to invest in (uh?) "solid" stocks, and trade only a few stocks looking for a homerun or two. Today I'm trying to be a good boy and just watch. 30% cash, I'm feeling uncomfortable about going all in at this point. Hope that helps, but I'm just a newbie and don't know what the lleh I'm doing. cheers
  • sterry: Pyramid - (scpanel 20), I can't keep up with that many. I'm still trimmed down but currently holding about 8 in my trading bin. A few spec plays I can't bear to part with. Preparing for the big dip. wrt diversification, $IWN is doing very well lately. Long: $AAPL (duh!), $BP, $C, $F, $INTC, $IWN, $KMP, $VZ, $XME, cash.
  • Darce: NDN - another failed breakout today. I'm getting the feeling that these failed breakouts (BUCY, $IBM, $SHAW, $MRVL, RTN...not complete failures yet, but definitely not successful yet either) are the canary in the coal mine. If $IWN heads below the 20, that will be a bearish sign in my view, and I'll pare back positions. $CVS - still trading above the upper bollinger band on the daily chart, so I'm continuing to hold. As I mentioned over the weekend, I wouldn't have added last week had I noticed the recent high at around $38, but I don't feel compelled to sell just yet. I pulled up my stop though...tight leash.
  • sterry: ETFs for free. Tip for newbies. If y're like me and are trading light while practicing your skills, transaction fees are eating way too much of whatever gains you make. First, you might negotiate with your online broker for a lower fee. But, for a better practice sandbox I decided to open an account to trade ETFs with no transaction fees (Fidelity among others). I've been accumulating $IWN with quite a good return so far. (At fidelity) there's only a limited selection of iShares you can trade with no transaction fee. 25K required for daytraders. Otherwise 2.5K minimum. fwiw :)
  • sterry: $IWN has seen a nice run up lately. High vol yesterday. Wonder if it's rolling over? Guess we'll have a better idea at today's close.
  • Dannomon: $IWN - Agreed. The close today below the low of the day yesterday will affirm this push down and I'd look for the rest of the week to continue down. If it manages to keep its head above water, we may see some tug 'o war for a few days before going either way again (though in my opinion, everything is pointing down).
  • sterry: $IWN - on the other hand, with such high volume, maybe the bears were tested yesterday? Guess we'll see. Trying to sit on my hands today, ... time-out to revaluate my strategies. ugh. $IWN currently up +0.86%
  • sterry: Trading Action - $MSFT, I have the same difficulty. I just took profits on 1/2 position of $MSFT, but now I want it back! I had this thought.... on solid employees (ie the ones almost certain to go back up... hmmmmm), instead of selling on the way down, I'll look for a bottom, add to position, then sell on the way back up. $IWN - I'm long, and almost(?) certain it will go back up. So I'm holding, and want to buy more. hmmmm... Maybe, its just my positions are too small.
  • sterry: $IWN, - I'm going to jump into this on Monday. This will be a "I just need to get back in at this level." move. Anybody else looking at this?
  • sterry: $IWN, bailed. I'm such a wimp.

  • Suzie: Pursuant to rule 11890(b), NASDAQ, on its own motion, will cancel all trades greater than 20% away from the prior day's close executed today between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. ET. This decision cannot be appealed. The stocks affected are as follows with the reference price (previous close) to calculate the high & low break point: $AFL ($64.25), $CPA ($35.03), $EQR ($49), FCL ($37.11), $FFCH ($26.31), $GE ($24.79), $GLDC ($1.908), $IJS ($68.85), $IWN ($70.34), $KBE ($35.83), $MCO ($36.6), $OKE ($36.49), $OLP ($16.82), $PCL ($56), $PCP ($88.15), $PJB ($23.49), $PRU ($83.99), $PSL (26.1492), $PX ($82.16), $RKH ($111.7), $RNR ($50.63), $SSO ($53.17), $STT ($59), $TCBI ($20.36), $TGT ($55.53), $UNM ($24.95), $VEU ($43.58), $WFC ($37), $IWO ($74.5608), $IJT ($64.52), $PSL ($26.1492), $IWN ($70.34) The list of reference points with high and low break points will be posted on NASDAQTrader.com shortly.
  • Gabe: I was skeptical during last weeks rally, but this breakdown is not convincing either (yet). I'd like to see volume pick up a bit. $IWN, $IWS and $IVE bounced right back lower from their 50DMA, but on low volume. This suggests that value investors are not feeling trapped yet, and could interfere with my momentum-driven #shorting approach :) Therefore, I am reluctant to place new shorts, rather I have covered them. I'm sitting on a large cash positions, waiting out the possible retest on the sidelines. I expect some random choppiness between 1320 and 1400 on the S&P 500 in the coming days. There is no short-term trend, so I see no edge in trying to trade this market, other than for some minor positions.
  • Gabe: This bounce is driven by value investors and cheap stocks, not the former high fliers. Value indeces, such as $IVE, $IWN, $IWS are just about to touch their 50DMA. They will be my tell on whether the rally holds. So far I remain skeptical.

The investment seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the Russell 2000 Value Index (the "underlying index"). The fund generally invests at least 90% of its assets in securities of the underlying index and in depositary receipts representing securities of the underlying index. The underlying index measures the performance of the small-capitalization value sector of the U.S. equity market. It is a subset of the Russell 2000?
