  • joelsg1: @Mikev200 $AMGN $XLV $LLY Holding this one for 15 years, since $47, with a little trading around. Best way to make big money is find and buy a great company and hold on, too hard to time the old in/out on any regular basis (though we all post about it here).

Look at financials ($XLF) and Healthcare ($XLV). Those are two sectors that seem to be attracting buying now. We’ve got $BAC (Up nearly 16%) and $XLF (just getting started and up 25) going on the ATI List.

  • scottrades: $XLV Close to the highs
  • X802tp01: $IWM $XLF $XLI $XLV all working Tom Lee expects a 50% gain in $IWM this year. As of yesterday close $IWM was up 6%. He gives many reasons including the green light from June CPI for small caps and a 3 year high 15% short interest in small caps. Mark Newton is looking for a confirming BO this week. Largest position from below and added 4 times since BO at 210. Trying Dan's approach of loading up on the winner with a series of trailing stops.
  • X802tp01: $XLV starter position. nearing BO for lagging health care. Play on market broadening out. Seasonally strong. It has been up 9 out of last 10 June months, 9 out of last 10 July months with avg return of 2.48%.
  • bigbartabs: $XLV $CURE ... hit bottom
  • phgruver: $CVS is coming off a disappointing earnings report, but, after this selloff, they are sporting a 4.75% dividend! The divy is still well supported by earnings, and would appear to be safe. $XLV itself is coming off a low base. Unless you think the govt. is about to abolish the health care industry, this would appear to be a good place to start, or add to, a position.
  • phgruver: Just looking at some sectors: $XLU (electric utilities) is up for the 3rd day in a row. Also $XLV (healthcare) is up a bit, but, more importantly, showing a bottoming formation near the 200dma. Both of these are defensive plays, which may be saying something about the market mindset....
  • phgruver: @woodman $LLY $ABBV, $LLY and $MRK are certainly driving $XLV higher!
  • phgruver: @PTinME $CVS This is one you have to "buy right." Long term, it's a pretty good hold with a reasonable dividend, but, you're not going to make a lot of money trading $CVS. (Actually, most of $XLV are slow movers.) Not for everyone, but for an income producing stock in a LT (retirement) account, it's a good stock to own, and probably a good place to buy. The recent high, Feb 2022, was $111.25, so we're near the bottom of a 3 year range.
  • Pard: $XLV (almost) breaking out of a multi year consolidation
  • maracom: Good morning all! Indices gave us a higher low, so now we need to see if we get higher high or a lower high next. I'm guessing we'll get a lower high and another pullback leg down to $SPY 460, so I'll keep some short exposure unless we make a higher ...
  • oldtimer: @bigbartabs $DJI $SPX $NDX $RUT : watching your list carefully . . lots of deep-down trending slopes as I draw extending lines. Only items of interest $UNG/$BOIL Late at this point; $XBI/$LABU holding at 8 dema; $XLF/FAS holding at 8 dmea; $XLV/$CURE late but watching.
  • bigbartabs: @oldtimer $DJI $SPX $NDX $RUT $UNG $BOIL $XBI $LABU $XLF $XLV $CURE ... yes, close watch, and being careful is now in order. Fake outs may be in style for awhile.
  • woodman: @champ $LABU Many are also expecting healthcare to have a good 2024. $XLV
  • champ: @woodman $LABU $XLV....I will be trading this ETF and if that move happens....I would sure like to keep making these real nice Trading Profits.....Good Luck! ....It is obviously why.....I don't swing these type of ETF's......I only D-trade them.
  • bigbartabs: @oldtimer $USO $XOP $GUSH $UNG $XLE $XLF $XLV ... glad it helps. Over time... I have simplified my trading by staying at a higher level... mainly the index derivatives (1x triggering the 3x ETFs), and then the major sectors (the same, 1x triggering the 3x ETFs). Sometimes I'll trade some individual tickers... but that's not where I buy and sell in size, like I do at the index and sector level trades. I have enough trouble staying on top of indexes and sectors, let alone hundreds of individual stocks. Of course everyone has their druthers... developed over decades of trading. FWIW... all the best buddy... sounds like you are doing just fine at this crazy "job" we all decided to bite off! ==:O
  • oldtimer: @bigbartabs $USO $XOP $GUSH Good Evening . . have been tracking your list that you gave to me a few weeks back. For a while the list was all above the 8WMA . . seeing a lot of items dropping below and have updated my charts with new trend lines. $UNG, $XLE, $XLF, $XLV maybe, and as you mentioned $XOP. Thank you again for the ideas and need to figure out my buying strategy. starting small

  • camaro69: @phgruver $PFE $XLV Thanks for your post! This has been an easy one to hold since you posted
  • phgruver: If anyone is interested, $PFE has filled the gap from 12/12/23, and is now trading above the closing price of the day before the gap down. These "bad news" selloffs are often buying opportunities. Almost all the members of the health care sector ($XLV) are trading near 52 week lows. For a long term, income oriented portfolio, this is something to consider, going into the new year.....
  • phgruver: $CVS is trading higher after they raised the guidance for FY24 and also raised their dividend from $.60 to $.665/qtr ($2.66/year). At today's price, that puts the yield at 3/7%. Along with healthcare, in general ($XLV) $CVS has been trading flat for over 6 months and is down about 30% on the year. With the 50dma and the 200dma about to cross, though, this may be one to consider in a long term, income oriented portfolio.
  • phgruver: Possible bounce play with $PFE. The dividend is $0.41/qtr, which equates to 5.67% at this price. Unless you expect $PFE to totally collapse, this is a pretty good #VALUE entry for a solid income in a long term portfolio. $XLV, in general, is down near lows, although $LLY and $NOV seems to be bucking that trend. (I also own $ABBV and $BMY for income)
  • bigbartabs: @Henry $ISRG $SYK $ZBH ... do you know why the drop? $XLV $CURE are both down this morning... the overall healthcare sector.
  • Henry: @bigbartabs $ISRG $SYK $ZBH $XLV $CURE Maybe it's just pin action from DVA. There was a study that what stopped because the evidence was that the fat drugs reduce the progression of kidney disease. The Street always over reacts. https://www.investors.com/news/technology/novo-nordisk-stock-pops-after-hinting-weight-loss-drug-treats-kidney-disease/
  • Docoof: @Henry $ISRG $SYK $ZBH $XLV $CURE Fwiw, (it’s really more of the same), a few minutes ago IBD’s Ed Carson tweeted: $NVO and $LLY weight-loss drugs promise big health benefits. But they also could sharply cut medical spending. Medical products stocks - diabetes, cardiovascular and now dialysis - have been diving on fears that GLP-1s will slash demand. It'll also mean a lot less hc labor. https://x.com/ibd_ecarson/status/1712136638737096972?s=46&t=R7IHRtfFyLf0cyPMxREPjw

  • DavidK: @DrScience $SPY $SPX $XLK $XLY $XLC $XLV $XLF #Markets well , I am short $QQQ , $IWM and $NVDA. I sold my calls on $ NVDA at the close yesterday . Should have waited as CEO was on CNBC pumping his stock yesterday . Had to add as I got it a little early . Big boys are setting up small fires for the slaughter .
  • champ: @DavidK $SPY $SPX $XLK $XLY $XLC $XLV $XLF $QQQ $IWM $NVDA #Markets.....Yes and everything we do is about #timings, both In and Out.....and thats Exactly why I'm here and also Why I'm on other websites.....because I work all of my Entries and Exits off of timings, off of #News. ....The better my on-time News-info is, the better my profits are. And IMO, as aways, Traders are at Work...... ....and I'm seeing #positive-News-flow for the Markets.......however Traders are always going to zig-zag the markets, always, over and over. So for Now, opportunities will keep popping-up and so will the zig-zags. IMO.
  • DavidK: @champ $SPY $SPX $XLK $XLY $XLC $XLV $XLF $QQQ $IWM $NVDA #Markets #timings #News #positive-News-flow sounds like what I try to do . I didn’t do my homework on NVDA ceo on yesterday . I am usually better than that . Markets are being juiced upwards . Be very nimble . When it falls it happens fast . Commercial real estate / banks exposure being overlooked . It’s gonna be ugly just not sure how much longer they can keep pushing this into the future .
  • bigbartabs: @DavidK $SPY $SPX $XLK $XLY $XLC $XLV $XLF $QQQ $IWM $NVDA #Markets #timings #News #positive-News-flow ... same with $TQQQ... I've been building a position since 5/12. now a big one. This has been a heckuva run.
  • phgruver: @Boone.ruth $LLY It's a bit extended, so be careful. That said, Healthcare, $XLV, is in a volatility squeeze, and could be ready to run with $LLY leading the way.
  • phgruver: I think it's been mentioned, before, that healthcare is holding up fairly well. In fact, $XLV is in a volatility squeeze, 3.2%, and looks poised to move up. Personally, I like the chart, and have a cautious long. Today, so far, is a reversal bar.
  • phgruver: @phgruver $XLV Correction, today is a spinning top, right on the 20DMA. Classic indecision, but the chart is in an uptrend.
  • DrScience: #Markets $QQQ has moved back above VWAP (which is good), but $SPY is approaching VWAP slo-o-o-ly. This bodes less well for a move through without some resistance. Breadth is still 2:1 negative, but the $VIX has fallen to a new low and $TICKs have turned bullish as sectors have improved greatly with only $XLV, $XLB and $XLRE down more than 1/2% since the open.
  • DrScience: #Markets $SPY very mixed to start the week. A/D line is positive, but breadth is lackluster. The 4080 level in $SPX is again where the battle line is drawn. Early strength is threatening to turn back lower as heavyweight sectors $XLK and $XLV are dragging against lightweight sector strength in $XLB $XLE and $XLI.
  • RiccardoB: $XLV rotation. i’m in at $130. wish i had more.
  • woodman: $XLV strong
  • champ: @woodman $XLV ...$UNH $JNJ are helping....$CURE is also working.
  • phgruver: @woodman $XLV Missed it! I was trying to play $XLV during all that chop back in March, but took my eye off it. Of course, I do have some healthcare stocks that are doing OK....
  • DrScience: @woodman $XLV Yep! Everything in $XLV looks healthy, except $XBI. The stock is still mired in a downtrend, with the 50 crossing below the 200 yesterday. ☠
  • woodman: @DrScience $XLV $XBI - $XBI definitely under siege. Big weekly breakdown in Feb/March. The 8dEMA has been primary - with the 21dEMA secondary - descending resistance since 2/2. It has just again found/failed at this 21dEMA resistance on Monday and Tuesday, and is continuing down today.
  • DrScience: #Markets $SPY double bottom at 395.50 on 5-min chart at Noon. Of course, it's lower than the triple bottom at 396 just 45 minutes before. What does it mean? Pshew! I don't know. Mr. Market wants to be bullish, but only $XLE, $XLU and $XLP are higher than the open. Everything else is under water, gasping for air. If $XLK and $XLV can stage a rally, then they could pull $SPY back to retest the open at 398, but VWAP stand in the way. Acceptance above 398 doesn't change today's neutral tone much, but a move above the 399 double top does, at least, until we slam into the 50 DMA at 400. That's where the bears are lying in wait! And... there you have it.

  • Zernike: $XLV, I took the Swing Trade course over the break and now picked up a focused process that I now need to add some discipline to make it a habit. $XLV triggered at 136.44. Didn't rush to buy but watched the action and it was not confirming so I wa ...

The sectors I am focusing in on long are $XLB, $XLE, $XLI, $XLP, $XLV, $XME and $ITB. The market has lost the $XLF, $XRT, $XLK,$SMH and certainly the FANG stocks. Months ago we were discussing how in a bearish market the bears hunt for the weakest ...
  • phgruver: I like the way $XLV is setting up on the daily chart. It's above the 200dma, holding support at the 50dma and trading just above the lower Bolenger Band. To me, it looks poised to move higher over the next couple of weeks. $XLV has nearly 20% of it's assets in $UNH and $JNJ, and another 5% in each of $LLY, $ABBV, $PFE and $ABT. Not surprisingly, all those underlying stocks have charts that look pretty similar. I own several stock in this space, (which I don't trade) and use options on $XLV to add to my returns. Many of these stock are good dividend payers, which pay well in the long term, if you get good entries.

The $XLV bounced off the 50 day EMA yesterday and while it is pushing against the 21 EMA today this is another sector that could be bullish going into the end of the year. $LLY,$MRK, $CI, and $UNH are stocks to review for opportunities in the $XLV ...
  • sierramp: It's dicey trading in a low volume environment but I'm watching $XLV $HUM and $CNC Took a position in $HUM this morning with support around 494.85 and resis around 548.76 It goes div-ex on the 29th which could create an approximate 79¢ PB.

The ETF's are deteriorating as well. The market has already lost the $XLE although yesterday it seemed to put in a fight. Maybe it will build a base here and be an opportunity going forward. The $XLP, $XLV, $XLB, $XLU, $XME, and $TAN are all coming ...

So what do we do? A few of the leading ETF's have had substantial damage to their charts. $XLE,$XLF and $XLV all have been under pressure. The $XLB,$XLI,$TAN and $XLP are holding up well and I am looking at stocks in those sectors. I continue to se ...

  • Rockstar: @Amisure $SPY $VIX $XLE $XLF $XLV $XLB $XLI $TAN $XLP No offense taken. Just look at their record. They have always reacted too late (both ways). I have been posting about the actions ever since i came on board. This is not in any way shape or form hindsight. Just go back and look at my posts about them and their actions. They are the one's that talked about "transitory inflation". I said when I first started that inflation was due to supply issues. It took them far too long to realize that and I am still not convinced they do.

The $XLE fell apart last week as /CL pulled back by almost 10% for the week. I am not looking at any longs in this sector right now. The $XBI closed below its averages so no longs here either. The $XLB closed below the 8EMA Friday but above the ...

  • steve71: $IWM $IHI $XBI $XLV All green. Looks like buyers want recession - resistant growth.
  • Docoof: @steve71 $IWM $IHI $XBI $XLV In your opinion, does it make sense to include $KIE with these? It’s the S&P’s insurance ETF. (Although, it’s currently very slightly in the red.)
  • steve71: @Docoof $IWM $IHI $XBI $XLV $KIE You are probably right. Higher interest rates are good for insurance as they get more return on their massive cash flows. In the short run they take a hit in their quarterly reports - they have to mark to market (down) the older low interest paper they hold. But long run they like the higher rates. Question is, how much less insurance is sold in a recession?
  • Docoof: @steve71 $IWM $IHI $XBI $XLV $KIE Thanks for taking the time to give a detailed answer. Your answer makes it clear that, although insurance companies could do ok, that sector is not typically thought of as recession-resistant growth—and that’s what I was wondering about. Thanks!
  • steve71: @Docoof $IWM $IHI $XBI $XLV $KIE One exception to recession slowing might be medical insurance. UNH, CAH etc are turning into conglomerates which provide insurance, pharmacy benefits, clinics, vaccinations etc. Owning XLV captures some of those.
