I looked at some of the other gainers but those had hammer patterns, not a good sign. I got as far as $ADY and $WOR with looking at charts and am putting this up now wthout looking at all the charts since we've only got 12 minutes. I'll look at these after the market and see if any might be a good entry.
  • eleKtra: Gold miners are having their day in the sun. Watch as long suffering junior golds like $RBY, $EGO, $IAG and yes, even $NGD, roar forward here.
  • neil375: $GOLD, $IAG - Rangold Resources has moved above recent resistance of about 83.5. Seems like it has made a reversal since a low on 3/15. Haven't looked at the gold miners lately but this looks interesting to me. AS does IAG. $IAG is showing a bullish engulfing candle and is in an uptrend. $GLD - made a new high today also. I'm long $GOLD calls. Just a heads up.
  • Arie: $IAG - I'm trying to get into $IAG ATM... yea, the daily chart looks scary! But look at the weekly. It's going to print a new 52-wk high if it stays over $20.25. I think I've been sleeping today :(

  • Arie: $AUY / $IAG - Had a discussion a few days ago about this. Now that both companies have reported, it looks like I choose wrong (IAG). $IAG had a bad report, net earnings decreased $24.1 million from the third quarter of 2009. I'll probably switch horses, maybe as soon as today (while I still have a small profit in IAG).
  • bullmoose: $IAG / $AUY (Arie) - You're winning! $IAG is spanking $AUY to this point.
  • Arie: $IAG / $AUY - Yes, seems my 'gut feeling' was right this time....
  • Arie: $AUY, $IAG - @bullmoose, I traded $AUY recently and did good, was looking to get back in, but I'm looking at $IAG instead. Looks a bit stronger technically.
  • shunsick: $AUY, $IAG - Nov 3rd and Nov 5th Earnings report coming up.
  • Arie: $IAG - Put my $ where my mouth is, got a small position in IAG. Needed some as I was completely out of gold since I sold my remaining $AUY on the 18th. I can't get $GLD, so I have to buy a miner instead...
  • bullmoose: $AUY, $IAG (arie) - Why do you think $IAG has a better technical picture? It's in a tighter weekly channel, and is bouncing off the 40-week, but it's also under the 20-day and 50-day averages. $AUY is expanding the weekly bollinger bands to the upside and has just tested and rebounded off of support at the 40-week and 50-day, forming a higher low. That's a nice support level. I put my stop at 10.49 and limit my downside. They both look good to me. We'll see which one outperforms the other. :o) I love competition!
  • Arie: $AUY, $IAG - @bullmoose: Yup, you are right on the technical picture of $AUY, you can probably make a better case for $AUY then IAG... but I'll go with my gut on this one. I know, not very good, but what the heck :) Both $IAG and $AUY have been good to me in the past, and I traded $AUY last, so decided to take a new stab at $IAG this time.
  • mongo: Gold, Hui index, $GSS, $NGD, $IAG, GBG- I would like to hear people's thoughts on gold and the gold miners. I hold positions in these and they seem to have decoupled to some degree from the broader market and trade more with gold spot price. My question is this a good selling point or is this a bull flag? The broader market is trending down, but gold is seasonally strong in the Fall and this year is shaping up as no exception. Also some of these stocks seem to be forming the proverbial "triple top" (especially GSS). As @Dan has pointed out trading anything gold-related is choppy at best and it is easy to get shaken out by volatility. At times Gold is a cruel, cruel mistress.
  • marich: $IAG Question re $UBS upgrades: gold miner $IAG - great group in Burkino Faso - earnings tonight - $UBS just upgraded from 18.50 to 20.50. How do these upgrads work - typically influence price?? I will hold over earnings today. or is it late when they issue up/down grades generally?

  • claudiohbpeg: Platinum & @Cmac - Thanks for the hints, and btw I was really involved in making money and I must say that (till now) is the best performance I had in 20 years. My bet on gold/@silver sector with $CDE,EGO,$GFI,GSS,$IAG,NXG,$SLW has and had an AMAZING net return.
  • karkn: $NG @HumanGeorge, For my money, I like some of the other gold stocks a lot better. $NG has been in more of a slow downtrend than an uptrend. In contrast, others $EGO, $IAG, $HL, $GG, $AUY to name a few were either trading in channels or uptrends. In addition, $AUY is also moving out of a #squeeze and held above the magic 10.00. Resistance is a fair %age now. IMA has also cleared resistance. $EGO is mid channel. I'd be looking here first but just my opinion. Long $AUY
  • claudiohbpeg: $GDX - I am bullish on the sector favoring @silver players like $CDE & $SLW, for the gold sector I like $IAG & EGO. The highest short ratio on gold players belong to $HL just in the case of gold sector pop.... $TCK & $FCX may be to some great play.
  • JamesLutfy: $HAL, $IAG I spent a second drawing what I see in Halliburton and was wondering what others think. Basically, I think it is breaking out from a Head and Shoulders Pattern that allows for a better entry and tighter stop than $WFT or BJS. http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=HAL&p=D&b=4&g=0&id=p79468208679&a=176362985 I was also looking at Iamgold, $IAG, and it appears to be a rising wedge pattern to me. I realize that if gold and copper prices go up $IAG will sail away with the rising tide, but I was still wondering if I am right about this pattern. Out of all of the major patterns in technical analysis I feel wedges are the most subjective and the hardest to trade/make money on. http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=IAG&p=D&b=4&g=0&id=p79468208679&a=176363701

  • imortalz: Neither are buys here. Don't let your emotions get to you, You feel like you're missing out of the trade. Both of those stocks are outside of the BB Bands. The stock will come into you or you just got to admit that you missed this one. The only one I would even think about is $IAG, and it just completed day 1 of it's break out.
  • imortalz: Took a starter position in $IAG, Looking better than the others technically. Trading behind others
  • BamaPete: Gold miners are rocking, early volume in the group and their etf, $GDX, much higher than recent days for first 45 minutes of the day. I know @Dan is not big on owning any of these at the moment if I've listened correctly to his recent videos, but the chart setups in some names are compelling imo. Examples, $EGO, $AUY, LIHR, $IAG, GDX.
  • 4drSedan: $GSS, $IAG, MFN, $GG, NXG, $ABX

Good morning fellow traders. Following up on @Dan's thoughts on inflation I see some of the gold stocks awfully compelling here. Here are a few I culled from a list last night which made for sweet dreams.

    GSS: ...
  • Gabe: Slow consolidation day. Went to the local Lowe's to get some things, it's nearly empty. Not a good sign. Not feeling the urge to enter trades before the close. $AU, $EGO, $IAG, $GFI near possible entry points, but I'd like to see them hold the support first, so I'm waiting. New low in $SKF, but not a new high in XLF. Not the first time that I notice that the ultras tend to "overshoot" to hit the stops. A bit suspicious, isn't it? All this tells me is that I better stick with the regular $ETF even when going short. Have a good weekend!
  • kiwi: Hi @Dan, I'm a new-be here. thanks for all the wise advice. Is it a good time to get more $AUY and $IAG, or should I wait for it start bouncing back? THX
  • Russ: 1) For those watching $IAG, it is back to flirting with $8 right now and can't make up it's mind. Volume has dropped off for the moment, so presently not many seem to be unloading. We will see.... 2) I'd encourage all new and recent plebes to trading to read @Gabe and @Dan's posts at 11:44 and 12:11 today. It has taken me a while to learn what they say here. These two posts sum up quite well what might otherwise take several weeks (months?) of experience to realize. Russ
  • Gabe: The breakdown has decimated the handful of uptrending stocks that I've been watching. My scanner found 35 uptrending stocks (200DMA < 50DMA < 20DMA, 50 < RSI, 50DMA < close) yesterday, 6 of them short ETFs, and some of the just trending sideways. That must be a new low record. That said, I did find some nice uptrending stocks flying under the radar (with the exception of $IAG, which is more well-known): . These stocks are too small to be part of an $ETF, and are weathering the storm fine so far. Once we get a bounce going, they could provide some opportunities for the nimble traders among us.

Add this with the fact that the monthly and weekly chart of $GLD is looking topped out and $KGC, $ABX, $AUY, $GDX, $NEM, $AEM, $IAG, and the other stocks we always mention are doing so poorly, who is to think that we have not reached the top for the ...
  • JamesLutfy: I do not mean to be critical, but how have $GG, $ABX, $KGC, and $AEM been good buys in comparison to other inflation plays? Since Jan. 1, they have not outperformed $GLD nor $GDX,. I also don't understand why $AUY and $IAG seem to be cast towards the side even though these have been the best gold plays over the course of the year.
  • Sizzle: James, $IAG has been on a tear! If you've been long, you've done well. But finding a good entry in the last month would have been tough. $AUY looks like most of the other gold miners. I'm not sure why one would think it's been "tossed to the side". Sometimes it's just a matter of what people are in (or seem to be) and what's working the best (or seem to be) that determines what gets talked about. If you've been long one or both, that's great - you don't need anyone's confirmation that you've done well - it's in your wallet - the only place it really matters.

  • kevinkadz: @Dan, in looking at IAG's weekly chart I see resistance at $7.00 dating back to last winter's support point. Do you think this will be strong resistance? • loupoho: @Dan Nice video roundup of the gold stocks. Thanks. Since your previous roundup I've replicated your $TC charts to show uncluttered line charts of gold stocks, including miners, $GDX and $GLD, with the comparison to HUI-X. I've included $SLV, but it continues to under perform. It seems to me that those of the stocks that were under performing HUI-X continue to under perform. That said, it appears that the cream of the crop remain the same. The ones that seem to have outperformed the HUI-X are $ABX, $EGO, $GOLD, $IAG, $NEM & KGC. Together with $GLD, they make for a decent shopping list. I have starter positions in $EGO, $GOLD and $HMY and am looking to expand. I will probably expand by selling some puts to lower my entry price. @Lou

  • ocean65: As a matter of disclosure - I was doing some technical analysis of the gold charts and the weakness and distribution in gold stocks today, the XAU and the HUI. The result is I just dumped all my Gold stocks - profits on $KGC and $EGO and taking a hit on $IAG - but net up!. Long term Bull but I think we test $820 over the next few weeks. That's where I will re-enter - If I get more confirmation I will look to scalp some shorts in this sector. If this happens $AUY could go back to $13. OK now you all know - I could be wrong but my charts are saying ere on the side of caution.
  • ocean65: Morning all - turkeybone, $AUY disappointed some folks yesterday with its results, the expectations in my view were a little silly. Its still in a defined upward channel and over the long term is one of the best of breed. Gold seems to be holding its upward channel form Sept 2007, I would preferably like it to test $850 or consolidate around $900 for a while. If I did not have $KGC, $EGO and $IAG I would nibble some $AUY here - already a bit overweight this sector!
