    Hi, Friends,

I will probably buy it next week as the selling continues today. $ERF I did buy $ERF on the drop today but put in a stop just below the low of the day. $GTAT is a good company but why did it drop so precipitously? I suppose it's because they're growing, building new factories, etc. I still hold but put a stop in place just below todays low. I got stopped out of a half a position in $WDC.

  • Sunrising: Hi guys, I am new here. Love the Forum, very interesting discussions here. I want to ask a question about ERF. I picked up some $ERF around $13, because of nice divs. Want to keep it for a very, very long time. Even though $ERF was cutting divs, which is not good, but stock looks like it has more upside potential then downside on yearly, quarterly and monthly charts. Divs are 5.53% per share for now, but I am not sure if they will be cut more or not and if it worth holding a stock in such uncertainty. I do not have a full position in $ERF, 1/3 for now and want to build it up to a full position. Not sure if it is a good time to do it. Thank you. Julia
  • SADL: $ERF @ Julia; I am long 50% of a position in ERF's Canadian equivalent ERF.TO; I am waiting for a pull back closer to the 50 DMA to add to my position. I find it is too extended now
  • Sunrising: $ERF @SADL; Thank you @SADL. It does make sense to wait for 50MA pullback on daily. I was concentrating on a monthly chart and it looks on monthly almost like a volatility #squeeze. So I am kind of afraid that daily 50MA pullback will never come, specially because on daily $ERF created nice bottoming tail today and pulled back to 20MA. This bottoming tail shows that buyers are coming in and supporting the price for now. I guess, I should be more patient and see what tomorrow brings, it might be this pullback (with the markets). Thanks again.
  • dkall: @sunrising; I'm certainly not a technical expert and I know nothing about the company but on the weekly chart, $ERF looks like it broke a downtrend back in March/April and has been @zig-zagging up since. You could consider July to early November a consolidation on a daily chart with a recent breakout. If that holds, then $ERF is just pulling back to test support and should move higher. That would be my hypothesis if I were in the stock.

  • iron: $ERF @jan2138 yes thanks for the direction.
  • garoadwarrior: $ERF - this one maybe turning around. Almost 12% yield paid monthly. Recommended by @Doug Fabian. "In my mind, there are three main reasons why you would want to own shares in Canadian oil and gas companies. First, these investments are #dividend-paying stocks that provide you with income. Second, they offer potential capital appreciation, since rising oil prices have been lifting the price of oil and gas company stocks along with them. Third, Canadian oil and gas companies, in particular, are appealing as a hedge against a decline in the U.S. dollar, since they do business in Canadian dollars."

  • jan2138: $ERF,PGH...dave; $PGH was another one I owned years back until the so called conservative Canadian gov't. messed up this whole sector. When 5920 mentioned $ERF, I was stunned that it is yielding almost 12%, greatly caused by it's recent plunge. Thanks for your learned comments. I will kim as I look at this and the others you mention now that my interest has been stimulated. edit: BTW, full on both $MFA and HTS.
  • Doug1: $MHR $ERF has a far nicer chart (higher lows) and is in the oil & gas field. Sitting right on the 50 dma.
  • karkn: $ERF also did a secondary last night. Canadian energy monthly payer. yield ONLY 9% so not quite a hog either. This stock is beat down because of their natgas exposure. I added a little. I like monthly payers. Those secondaries are coming fast and furious now. Waiting for $KMP, $EVEP to take their turn.

  • Dave: What's working (or at least not so bad that you run away from like your hair's on fire): $DBA (Volatility #Squeeze!), $STON, $ZAGG (don't like this personally but have to give it kudos for holding in here), $NSR, $ERF, $TSO, $LNG, $AXTI, $BZF, $DTLK, $AAPL, ROC?, $TLT and of course, $SLV, $GLD, $DBP and about any inverse $ETF or derivation thereof. I realize that some of these are subjective, but feel free to add or contest some. btw, I'm long a whopping 2 of these - $SLV and $STON and not full positions on either.
  • Dave: Some stocks that are working: HEK, $DTLK, $ERF, $STON, $TSO, $LNG, $AXTI, $DECK, $AAPL, $NSR, $ROC, $CRK, $TLT, $CLNE, $ESV, $LYB, $REE, $MCP, WG. A couple of themes that I see - energy names, clean fuels, and rare earths. Thanks to those posters who have pointed out some of these, also. Other stock suggestions for this list are welcome. This is not to say that "all's fine in the water, jump in" because several of the major indices are sick and up to 80% - 85% of all stocks will follow the prevailing market trend. But these stocks are holding up relatively well, at a minimum, in a very uncertain market.
  • Lhimmell: @jan2138: What do you think of $BFR, an Argentina Bank. Also, Some Canadian Energy TRusts, $ERF and PGH. Yields $BFR 12.5 % $ERF 7.1% $PGH 6.7% Maybe the last two don't have high enough yields to be HOGS.
  • Lhimmell: @jan2138 Here are some other high yielding stocks: ----- Yjeld $BFR 12.5% $ERF 7.1% $PGH 6.7% $BFR is an Argentina Bank, and the other two are Canadian Energy Trusts that pay monthly. I haven't done any due diligence yet.
  • jan2138: @Lhimmell: BFR; can't find any info. in English so do not have an opinion. Was in both $ERF and $PGH among other Can Roys but sold them when the yields got less attractive and the picture got muddied with the changes in structure some were making.

  • chrismibs: #Yieldhogs - CPNO, LINE, PVX, $PWE, $ERF @DavidM, thanks for bringing this up. I was going through some of the #yieldhog charts this morning (e.g., Line, CPNO) and some other high yielders (eg PVX, $PWE, ERF) and shocked to see a) how badly they looked on the daily, and, b) how far away support looked on the weekly. I see that #rhrn both LINE and CPNO are up on the daily, and kudos if you added, but am still wondering what the group thinks about support for these names - do the charts not matter given the ferocity of the selloff? I'd like to hang my hat on the #dividend, but doing that early this week would have been quite painful.... @Chris
  • dthurn: $PWE & $ERF - I have been watching/owning these Canadian stocks for years. Please review the charts going back at least 3 years with respect to dividends and stock price. I think that you will see a significant difference between the two company's stocks. Also: BEWARE, you might not want to own them in a retirement account because of tax reasons. Also, I found out the really hard way that the dividends can be slashed. Use stops. Also look at PGH. Be aware of the impending Canadian tax law changes. I still own $PWE, but also own $PBT which is a US of A company.
  • Darce: $PWE & $ERF - @dthurn, there are tax consequences in a retirement account? Can you elaborate? Thx.
  • dthurn: $PWE & $ERF -- Tax consequences.....DISCLAIMER, check this out with your tax guy. I am only speaking for myself. In my case, Canada taxes the dividends it pays to me and doesn't care where I put those dividends. At US of A tax time, these foreign taxes are entered and my tax burden is reduced for my regular brokerage account. (Exactly how much they are reduced I let my $CPA figure it out.) In my retirement accounts there is no such provision so Canada gets to keep the taxes. NOTE: for several years the #dividend was so high that the taxes didn't matter. Now, they do. (For me, I mean.)
  • Darce: $PWE & $ERF - @dthurn, thanks for taking the time to elaborate. Appreciate it!
  • dthurn: $C, $Q, $USU - I ran stopless for a while. My lesson cost me tens of thousands of dollars. Take a look at what $PWE, $ERF, $PGH did for the past 3 years. At one point I was 70% down. I wish that I had set a stop at minus 20%. Now I set my initial stop at between a 5 - 7 % loss. My thinking was faultless, except that it was wrong. I thought things like "It just can't go any further down. Ha, not only did the stock price drop but the dividends also fell.
  • Darce: Rob, $CSIQ is Canadian, right? It's sometimes listed as a Chinese Solar Stock. Also, are you familiar with a sector or type of enterprise called Canadian Energy Trusts--firms like $ERF, $PDS, $PGH, PVX and PWE? I've been tracking a sector, and it seems like these stocks are doing pretty well. Any wisdom on whether this is a good group of stocks? Thanks!
  • dthurn: Nat Gas - It is not that simple, to me at least. I have been following the price of natural gas and trading/tracking natural gas stocks (PWE, $PGH, $ERF, PBT) for about 5 years. I cannot find a strong (positive or negative) correlation between the price of the commodity and the price of the stock. Nor can I find a strong correlation between stock prices and season. There seems to be a higher price of the commodity in the summer which is probably due to increased electrical demand in summer. There are other variables involved which may include transportation issues or politics. By the way, the correlation that I am referring to is only my eye-ball correlation. Maybe I'll get motivated to do a statistical correlation some day.
  • dthurn: Yield Hog. Bravo! I have printed out your post and plan to spend a lot of time reviewing it. HOWEVER, one thing I learned the very hard way. Keep setting the stops. I owned $PWE, $PGH, $ERF, in '07 when they were high yielding stocks. In October '08 the bottom dropped out. I did not have stops set. The dividends also tanked.

  • jan2138: karkn: ERF; Canadian w.h. tax 15%. If you buy in a taxable a/c, you can, in effect, reclaim it by deducting it from your reported divs. In a tax deferred a/c, you can't get it back, so, you should take it into account when figuring your net yld.. Also, be sure to check the dist. amount because the Can Roys have been reducing them quite often. I sold my $ERF when the net yield was down in the 8% range. That said, it might be a decent oil play. Be advised that the tax status of the Can Roys is due to change in 2011. If you want more info, I can e-mail you an article which goes into some detail.
  • jan2138: yield hogs: Canadian Royalty Trusts, a subject we have not discussed in a long time. It's probably because they really performed badly when the market fell out of bed back in 2008. They were great yielders and pretty steady monthly payers but that al ...

  • orthodoc: Way to go @Dan, we'll send in support. $LDK moved today along with other alternatives...BWEN, TAN(the $ETF for solar) Picked up $EEP, looking at $ERF, $KMP and ALJ---breaking out of consolidations Look at $SHI for a chemical stock--China, small volume $BOOM, one of my old timers, still moving Looking at EK, $SWKS, and $GD Took off some $TIE today Will add more $NFLX and others on second day down tomorrow, if it happens, may need to be early to catch some of these just above support.
  • orthodoc: jan, Do you like TYG--energy with 10% #dividend in a #squeeze on charts? Also, what about $ERF and EEP?
  • jan2138: @orthodoc: TYG: not familiar with this but after cursory look, I am going to look at it more closely as the chart looks very interesting. I note that the management co. has 3 0ther CEF's which I intend to explore a bit, but I think that $TYG looks most interesting right here. I am long both $ERF and EEP. I have a full position in $ERF but will add to $EEP on a pullback to the mid bb and a notch up or after it continues to trade sideways for awhile watching the 50 day ema and the price of oil and the stars look aligned after such a move.

  • jan2138: cureus: I am "retired" too but working full time at this. I mentioned some names I "like", or more appropriately am comfortable with, which tend to be high yield. I want 9.50 or higher for a current yield and prefer the 10% + situations. Some names which are CEF's, pfds., CanRoys: BFD,ETV,$NIE,BGM,RGM,F.Pr.S,FCJ,CNE,$ERF,HTE,$PGH,PVX,PWE. PKJ is a Cooper Tire Preferred which has traded off of late and is yielding over 9%,trading in low 20's.

  • Yachtsman: @Craigy I've been focusing north of the border also, but on the Energy and Pipeline Royalty Trust. With any change in their tax laws five years away and yields averaging above 10% I've been culling through the lists. A few I'm eyeing are CNE ERF PMBIF (Toronto Exch.) $PWE PWI PVX TRP. Still doing my $DD and much more research to go. I expect more names to appear. I'd be interested in what you are finding. Long: $ERF TRP
